Anchors and producers for several ABC News programs found themselves in hot water this week when they mistook (or intentionally misrepresented) footage from a gun range in Kentucky for battlefield video from the conflict between Turkish and Kurdish forces in Syria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both World News Tonight Sunday<\/em> and Good\nMorning America <\/em>aired footage of heavy\nnighttime gunfire and explosions while anchors described the devolving\nsituation between Turkish and Kurdish fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis video right here appearing to show Turkey\u2019s military\nbombing Kurdish civilians in a Syrian border town. The Kurds, who fought\nalongside the U.S. against ISIS. Now, horrific reports of atrocities committed\nby Turkish-backed fighters on those very allies,\u201d said ABC News anchor Tom\nLlamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But after Twitter user Wojciech Pawelczyk<\/a> noted the striking similarity between ABC\u2019s\nfootage and a video from the Knob Creek Gun Range in Kentucky, the story began\nto unravel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Wow! ABC News is trying to pass gun range videos as combat footage from Syria pic.twitter.com\/zfTWtwwSfZ<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Wojciech Pawelczyk \ud83c\uddf5\ud83c\uddf1\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 (@PolishPatriotTM) October 14, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote> \n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The footage ABC aired appears to be zoomed in on the explosions, but a comparison between the two videos shows clearly that the videos are one and the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Knob Creek Gun Range hosts a biannual event called the Machine Gun Shoot and Military Gun Show, which includes a night shoot featuring tracer rounds and explosives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ABC News issued an apology but has not explained how the mix-up occurred. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “We\u2019ve\ntaken down video that aired on World News Tonight Sunday<\/em> and Good Morning America<\/em> this morning that appeared to be from the Syrian border\nimmediately after questions were raised about its accuracy,” a network\nrepresentative told the Washington\nExaminer<\/a><\/em>, which first reported\nthis story. <\/em>“ABC News regrets the error.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Knob Creek Gun Range has taken the incident in stride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe\u2019d like to thank ABC news for the free advertising on our\nBi-Annual Machine Gun Shoot and Military Gun Show!!\u201d the range wrote on\nFacebook. \u201cKeep up the good work ABC News!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n This isn\u2019t the first time a news outlet has mistakenly identified war footage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In one incident<\/a>, an Egyptian news anchor tried to pass off video game footage for Russian airstrikes against ISIS.
