We get headlines like:&nbsp;<em>Study: U.S. Gun Deaths Surge, Except for Two States With Restrictive Gun Laws,&nbsp;<\/em>just days after headlines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionleader.com\/news\/crime\/homicides-other-violent-crime-fell-again-in-new-fbi-data\/article_40d0fd0a-6d46-5cb6-ac5a-99e8ba96a1fa.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-muddying-the-waters-on-firearm-research\" title=\"NSSF: Muddying the Waters on Firearm Research\"><strong>such as:<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<em>Homicides, other violent crime fell again in 2018, new FBI data shows<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>FBI: Southern States See Largest Drop in Violent Crime.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the real story here? Did researchers unearth better crime data than the FBI?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Tells<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out that it doesn\u2019t take much to see how the study\u2019s authors manage to make the news. They simply included suicides in with homicide data.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/safety\/suicide-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-muddying-the-waters-on-firearm-research\" title=\"NSSF: Muddying the Waters on Firearm Research\">Suicides<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;are tragically rising nationwide over recent years. However,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/msr-ownership-up-violent-crime-rates-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-muddying-the-waters-on-firearm-research\" title=\"NSSF: Muddying the Waters on Firearm Research\"><strong>homicides have been on the decline<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;Since suicides are two-thirds of all firearm-related deaths in a given year, combining the two shows a net increase. The state-specific data wasn\u2019t available online, apart from the sweeping conclusions and a carefully worded methodology that included adjusting the dates until the data fit the pre-conceived narrative. But we do know that suicide rates tend to be higher in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/new-study-points-to-real-problems-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-muddying-the-waters-on-firearm-research\" title=\"NSSF: Muddying the Waters on Firearm Research\"><strong>rural areas<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;with more risk factors including social isolation, lack of access to healthcare, unemployment and poverty. It shouldn\u2019t be a surprise that the study found higher rates in these areas. What is a surprise is the authors\u2019 weak and unsubstantiated attempt to connect this with gun control laws in more urban states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conflating Isn\u2019t the Cure<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no question that the increase in suicide rates is a crisis that must be addressed. The firearms and ammunition industry has partnered with groups like the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for this reason. But to come up with ways to help, it\u2019s important to focus on the actual issue, and not misleadingly lump together suicides with a separate \u2013 though also terrible \u2013 problem of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/msr-ownership-up-violent-crime-rates-down\/?hilite=%27homicides%27\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-muddying-the-waters-on-firearm-research\" title=\"NSSF: Muddying the Waters on Firearm Research\">homicides<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0Our industry knows there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssfrealsolutions.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nssf-muddying-the-waters-on-firearm-research\" title=\"NSSF: Muddying the Waters on Firearm Research\"><strong>different ways<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to help address each concern. Even the study\u2019s authors agree. In the final line of the entire misleading report, they write: \u201cThe epidemiology of firearm violence is complex and varies based on the mechanism of death, demographic group under study, and regionally specific culture, making a one-size-fits-all solution inappropriate.\u201d At least they got one thing right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Elizabeth McGuigan&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>is the Director of Legislative and Policy Research for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry.
