{"id":116718,"date":"2019-10-08T11:00:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T15:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=116718"},"modified":"2019-10-08T11:00:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T04:58:20","slug":"saf-hails-high-courts-decision-to-move-ny-gun-law-challenge-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/saf-hails-high-courts-decision-to-move-ny-gun-law-challenge-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"SAF Hails High Court&#8217;s Decision to Move NY Gun Law Challenge Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>BELLEVUE, WA \u2013 <\/strong>The Second Amendment Foundation today cheered the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s decision to move forward with a case that challenges a New York City gun law that was so restrictive the city amended it, and then tried to get the high court to dismiss the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re\ndelighted that the Supreme Court will move this important case forward,\u201d said\nSAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. \u201cThe Second Amendment\nFoundation has filed an amicus brief in support of overturning this egregious\nattempt to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms. We are confident that\nthe high court will ultimately rule in favor of Second Amendment rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncity scrambled to change the law once the court decided to accept the case for\nreview earlier this year. The challenge is brought by the New York State Rifle\nand Pistol Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\noutrageous that the city has furiously tried to derail this case by changing\nthe law,\u201d Gottlieb stated. \u201cThat says volumes not only about the city\u2019s fear of\nhaving to defend their restrictive gun control law before the court, but it\nalso suggests to us that the city knew all along their law would not pass the\nconstitutional smell test under any level of scrutiny, and they panicked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNew\nYork, and other state and local governments, have been getting away with\nadopting ridiculously oppressive gun regulations because lower courts have\nthumbed their noses at previous Supreme Court rulings in favor of the Second\nAmendment,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEqually\noutrageous, if not moreso,\u201d Gottlieb observed, \u201cwas the attempt by Capitol Hill\nDemocrats led by Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse to bully the high court by\nfiling a brief to dismiss the case or face the possibility that Democrats would\npack the court. How dare Whitehouse and his associates attempt such coercion.\nWe\u2019re proud of the Supreme Court justices for ignoring this threat to their\nindependence as a separate branch of government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Democrats\u2019 political demagoguery obviously backfired, and rightly so,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just might cost them in November 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About
