BELLEVUE, WA<\/strong> \u2013 The newly-release FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2018 says violent crime is down overall 3.3 percent from 2017, and the number of reported homicides involving firearms also declined, leading the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to ask Democrats and the gun prohibition lobby: \u201cWhat \u2018gun violence\u2019 epidemic are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the new FBI data, last year\nthere were an estimated 14,123 murders in the United States, which is down from\nthe 15,129 reported in 2017. In 2018, an estimated 10,256 slayings involved\nfirearms, down slightly from the 10,982 posted by the FBI during the previous\nyear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, the number of murders has gone down,\u201d\nCCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb observed. \u201cYet, in order to create the impression\nthat this country is awash in violent crime, gun grabbers routinely combine the\nnumber of homicides and suicides, plus accidental deaths and call them all acts\nof so-called \u2018gun violence.\u2019 It is deliberately misleading and downright\ndishonest. Why are Democrats and the gun prohibition lobby lying about this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is important to note,\u201d Gottlieb\ncontinued, \u201cthat last year, according to the new FBI data, only 297 murders are\nknown to have been committed with rifles of any kind, yet Democrats including\nall of those now running for president want to ban modern semiautomatic\nsporting rifles, which they repeatedly mischaracterize as \u2018weapons of war.\u2019\nMillions of honest citizens own such firearms, and they have harmed nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gottlieb, in the aftermath of the most\nsuccessful and largest Gun Rights Policy Conference in the event\u2019s 34-year\nhistory, said the time has come for the \u201chonest conversation\u201d anti-gunners\ncontinually demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s have this discussion,\u201d he challenged,\n\u201cand let\u2019s stick to the facts. Let\u2019s leave the emotions and theatrics outside.\nIt\u2019s time for the gun prohibition lobby, and their Democrat allies, to explain\nwhy they want to unilaterally disarm this country\u2019s law-abiding gun owners. Why\nare they determined to penalize every gun owner for crimes they didn\u2019t commit?\nWhy do they treat the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms as a\ngovernment-regulated privilege? The right to keep and bear arms predates the\nSecond Amendment. We have the Second Amendment to prevent the government from\ntaking away our liberty, and it\u2019s time for Democrats and gun grabbers to\nexplain why they want to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
