(Photo: Wikimedia Commons)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is warning hunters ahead of the upcoming deer season to be aware of a strain of tuberculosis that can be passed from game animals to humans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/68\/wr\/mm6837a3.htm?s_cid=mm6837a3_w\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-cdc-deer-borne-tuberculosis-michigan\" title=\"CDC Warns of Deer-Borne Tuberculosis After Michigan Man Becomes Infected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">believes<\/a> an unidentified 77-year-old Michigan man contracted pulmonary tuberculosis after being exposed to the <em>Mycobacterium bovis<\/em>&nbsp;bacteria. The man had no history of travel to countries with endemic tuberculosis, no known exposure to persons with tuberculosis, and no history of consumption of unpasteurized milk, all common causes of TB in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did, however, live in an area of Michigan with a\nhigher-than-usual concentration of <em>M. bovis-<\/em>infected\ndeer, and he regularly hunted and field-dressed game animals in the area over\nthe last 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC believes he likely inhaled the bacteria while cleaning\none of his kills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/hunt365-scientists-defending-trophy-hunting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-cdc-deer-borne-tuberculosis-michigan\" title=\"CDC Warns of Deer-Borne Tuberculosis After Michigan Man Becomes Infected\">Scientists Publish Letter Defending Trophy Hunting as Protecting Biodiversity in African Countries<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans rarely contract TB from deer, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/dnr\/fishwild\/files\/fw-TB_FAQSheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-cdc-deer-borne-tuberculosis-michigan\" title=\"CDC Warns of Deer-Borne Tuberculosis After Michigan Man Becomes Infected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Indiana Division of Fish and Wildlife<\/a>, but the CDC noted two previous cases in Michigan in 2002 and 2004. In both cases, the patients exhibited signs of an active disease and required medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid infection, the CDC encourages hunters to wear \u201cpersonal\nprotective equipment\u201d while field dressing an animal. The study does not specify\nthe kind of equipment that should be used, but many hunters use face masks and\nlatex gloves during the cleaning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the more common type of Tuberculosis bacteria, <em>Mycobacterium\ntuberculosis<\/em>, <em>M. bovis <\/em>can lead\nto active infections or remain dormant in a person\u2019s body for years. The disease\ncan be reactivated if a person becomes immunocompromised, according to the CDC.\nThe Michigan man described above may have contracted the bacteria long before\nexhibiting signs of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC also\nencourages \u201cclose collaboration between human and animal health sectors\u201d to\nstop the spread of the disease. While it can be fatal in some cases, most people who contract it can recover with a months-long regiment of antibiotics, William Schaffner, MD, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/michigan-man-contracted-tuberculosis-deer-175720545.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-cdc-deer-borne-tuberculosis-michigan\" title=\"CDC Warns of Deer-Borne Tuberculosis After Michigan Man Becomes Infected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disease is also\nuncommon among deer populations. The CDC notes that only 0.05% of the deer\nheads tested in Michigan were infected, and the Indiana DFW describes it as a \u201cvery\nrare disease.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infected deer appear emaciated and often have a cough, nasal discharge, and difficulty breathing. Small lesions or abscesses may be visible inside the chest cavity, covering the lungs, liver, and ribcage in late developed individuals, according to the Indiana DFW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
