(Photo: Hood County Sheriff)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sheriff in rural Hood County, Texas, has begun the process of declaring his jurisdiction a \u201csanctuary county\u201d in which any new state and federal gun control laws will not be enforced. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are scared. They don\u2019t want to lose their rights,\u201d Sheriff Roger Deeds told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/hood-county-sanctuary-county-gun-proposal\/287-6755c9a4-8926-4d68-a889-672701ac743e\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"texas-sheriff-sanctuary-county-protect-gun-rights\" title=\"Sheriff Calls for 'Sanctuary County' to Protect Gun Rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">local media<\/a>. \u201cThey have the right to protect themselves and we\u2019re going to make sure that they keep that right to keep and bear arms and protect themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deeds joins sheriffs in less gun-friendly states like Washington, Illinois, and California in calling for sanctuary counties to oppose state-level gun control laws. While the Texas legislature has historically defended gun rights, the Lone Star sheriff might be responding to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2019\/09\/06\/texas-lt-gov-dan-patrick-says-he-will-defy-nra-take-lead-on-gun-background-checks\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"texas-sheriff-sanctuary-county-protect-gun-rights\" title=\"Sheriff Calls for 'Sanctuary County' to Protect Gun Rights\" target=\"_blank\">calls for universal background checks<\/a> from Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick following massacres in El Paso and Odessa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat gun didn\u2019t pull its own trigger. It took somebody with\na demented mind that was maybe in that mental crisis mode to pull that\ntrigger,\u201d Deeds said. \u201cHere in this part of Texas people don\u2019t take too kindly\nto others, especially from the federal government, talking about wanting to\ntake away people\u2019s rights, people\u2019s weapons, rifles, pistols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy message to the people of Hood County is I\u2019m not going to\nstand by and allow anybody, if it\u2019s the federal government or whoever, stating\nthat they\u2019re going to take away people\u2019s rifles.
