{"id":115773,"date":"2019-09-18T10:15:08","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T14:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=115773"},"modified":"2019-09-18T10:15:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T04:06:16","slug":"exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due\/","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to &#8216;Political Pressure&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" title=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/redstone-2.gif\" alt=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\" class=\"wp-image-115778\" \/><figcaption><em>Jonathan and Geneva Solomon founded Redstone Firearms five years go to educate and train their clients in firearm use and ownership.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A historic newspaper in Los Angeles caved last week to unnamed \u201ceducational and political partners\u201d when editors decided to halt the publication of a pro-gun article highlighting a local gun shop and training service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan and Geneva Solomon were surprised and excited when the Los Angeles Sentinel reached out to them to write a profile on their firearm training business, <a href=\"https:\/\/redstonefirearms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due\" title=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\">Redstone Firearms<\/a>. The LA Sentinel is an African-American owned newspaper founded in 1933, and the Solomons cater primarily to the African-American community at two locations in the greater L.A. area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seemed like a good fit, and the journalist at the\nSentinel wrote a largely positive piece emphasizing the Solomon\u2019s commitment to\nsafe and responsible firearms handling and ownership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day before the piece was set to be published, however,\nthe Solomons were contacted by newspaper representatives who told them the\npiece was being pulled from the website due to political pressure. The\nrepresentative specifically mentioned a gun control group called Mothers in\nAction, and Jonathan believes the pressure on the newspaper originated at even\nhigher levels of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA group in Los Angeles called Mothers in Action got with Maxine Waters and Cory Booker to pressure the Sentinel until the newspaper said, \u2018We\u2019ll scrap it,\u2019\u201d Jonathan told GunsAmerica. \u201cWe\u2019ve been featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pasadenablackpages.com\/redstone-firearms--black-owned-and-ready-to-teach-you-about-weaponry.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due\" title=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"other media outlets (opens in a new tab)\">other media outlets<\/a> and have never had a problem. But when it comes to an all-black newspaper with an all-black self-defense company, they decided it was too much political pressure on them and they pulled it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geneva was able to screen capture most of the article before it was taken down for good, which we&#8217;ve published below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/cory-booker-gun-control-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due\" title=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\">Cory Booker Wants Nationalized Gun Licensing, One-Gun-a-Month, Universal Background Checks<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan admitted that the Sentinel representative didn\u2019t name Sen. Booker or Rep. Waters specifically, but he does recall the newspaper mentioning \u201cother political entities\u201d along with Mothers in Action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither the LA Sentinel nor Mothers in Action responded to\nmultiple requests for comment on this story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sentinel published <a href=\"https:\/\/lasentinel.net\/cory-booker-hosts-roundtable-on-gun-violence-prevention.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due\" title=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\">a piece<\/a> praising Sen. Booker\u2019s anti-gun advocacy only a week before the Redstone Firearms piece was set to post. The paper is also headquartered just north of Rep. Water\u2019s district, so it\u2019s likely that many of its <a href=\"https:\/\/lasentinel.net\/contact-us\/contact-list\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"exclusive-historic-la-newspaper-pulls-pro-gun-article-due\" title=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">executive and editorial staff<\/a> lives in the current and former districts of Congress\u2019 most senior black member. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Solomons felt that they had missed an opportunity to\npromote their family-owned business and been labeled as dangerous just because they\noperate a gun-related organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was highly irritated and pissed off. We\u2019ve never promoted anything negative. It\u2019s always been responsible gun ownership, consulting, educating and training. That\u2019s it. Guns are bad! You shouldn\u2019t talk about them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LA Sentinel also owns and operates a large, all-black\nfestival in Los Angeles called the Taste of Soul. The Sentinel first heard\nabout Redstone Firearms when the Solomons applied to be a vendor at the\nfestival, and the festival organizers initially agreed to allow Jonathan and\nGeneva to sell merchandise and promote their self-defense training services. The\norganizers were even prepared to make Redstone Firearms a \u201cfeatured vendor,\u201d\nwhich is why they wanted to publish the original story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the newspaper decided to pull the piece, the Solomons\nhad hoped they would still be allowed to pay for a booth at the festival. But\nthe festival organizers soon reversed course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy boss notified me that they do not feel comfortable having your booth at the festival,\u201d a Project Coordinator at Taste of Soul named Lauren Brazile told the Solomons via email. \u201cThey are concerned about backlash from our political and educational partners, as gun ownership is an extremely sensitive topic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazile promised to refund the Solomons $1,400 registration fee and apologized for \u201call of the confusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"473\" height=\"1024\" title=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-473x1024.png\" alt=\"Exclusive: Historic LA Newspaper Pulls Pro-Gun Article Due to 'Political Pressure'\" class=\"wp-image-115774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-473x1024.png 473w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-69x150.png 69w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-139x300.png 139w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1-768x1663.png 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/image1.png 1125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan was disappointed that his business had been marginalized by a newspaper he remembered seeing while growing up in the LA area. He told GunsAmerica his grandmothers would read the LA Sentinel every week, and he remembers riding his bike past their offices when he was a boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Jonathan and Geneva haven\u2019t been silent.
