Robert Francis \u201cBeto\u201d O\u2019Rourke became the nation\u2019s most openly radical anti-gun politician last week when he told moderators during a Democratic presidential debate that the mandatory gun buyback in his gun control platform doesn\u2019t go far enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked whether he wanted to confiscate guns from law-abiding\ngun owners, the former Texas Congressman responded, “Hell, yes, we’re\ngoing to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used\nagainst our fellow Americans anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If the high-impact, high-velocity round, when it hits\nyour body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do\nthat so that you would bleed to death on a battlefield … when we see that\nbeing used against children,” O’Rourke continued, recalling a child who\ndied during the El Paso massacre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
O\u2019Rourke\u2019s campaign wasted no time capitalizing on the viral\nmoment, tweeting just minutes later a shirt for sale featuring Beto\u2019s quote\nfrom the debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many have pointed out<\/a>\nsince the former Congressman\u2019s remarks went viral, the failed Senate candidate\nwas singing a different tune during his campaign to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz in\nTexas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“To be clear, they should have [AR-15\u2019s],” he said\non The Chad Hasty Show in April of 2018. “If you purchased that AR-15, if\nyou own it, keep it. Continue to use it responsibly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn Texas, we have a proud, rich tradition of hunting, of owning\nguns for self-defense, for sport or collection\u2026 just because it is fun to shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI want to learn from those who believe we should continue\nto be able to sell and purchase AR-15\u2019s in this country, and that there\u2019s a\nbetter way to do it,\u201d he continued. \u201cSign me up to listen and learn from that\nconversation and maybe I\u2019ll come to a different conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The O\u2019Rourke campaign has also been making hay out of a now-deleted tweet from Republican Texas state Rep. Briscoe Cain, who responded to Beto\u2019s debate comment with a challenge of his own: \u201cMy AR is ready for you Robert Francis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twitter removed the tweet because the company said it\nviolated its policies against violence and wishing harm against others, and\nBeto used it to suggest that Americans shouldn\u2019t be trusted with \u201cweapons of\nwar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked by CNN’s DJ Judd if Cain’s tweet constituted a\nthreat, Beto said, “Yeah, it sure reads like one to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI think it’s a really irresponsible thing for him to do,\nespecially somebody who is a public servant and in a position of public trust\nto be sending that kind of message to this country,” Beto continued.\n“We are a nation of laws, and if that ends up becoming the law of the\nUnited States of America, then we expect the people of this country to comply\nwith it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most surveys<\/a> still have Beto polling in the 1-3 percent range among Democratic voters, a full 24-22 points behind former Vice President Joe Biden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
