{"id":115631,"date":"2019-09-11T14:00:19","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T18:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=115631"},"modified":"2019-09-11T14:00:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T04:02:18","slug":"house-committee-three-anti-gun-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/house-committee-three-anti-gun-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"House Committee Advances Three Anti-Gun Bills, Including Comprehensive Mag Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"700\" title=\"House Committee Advances Three Anti-Gun Bills, Including Comprehensive Mag Ban\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/MagBan2-1024x700.jpg\" alt=\"House Committee Advances Three Anti-Gun Bills, Including Comprehensive Mag Ban\" class=\"wp-image-115634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/MagBan2-1024x700.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/MagBan2-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/MagBan2-400x273.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/MagBan2-768x525.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/MagBan2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>(<em>Photo: Jordan Michaels<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee advanced three anti-gun bills this week to the delight of the gun prohibition lobby. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. House understands that another day without stronger gun laws means another day of preventable tragedies,\u201d said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun-control organization funded by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow it\u2019s time for the Senate to do its job and pass meaningful gun safety laws \u2014 because the American people aren\u2019t going to settle for weak, watered down half-measures,\u201d added Feinblatt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bills headed to the House floor include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1236\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-committee-three-anti-gun-bills\" title=\"House Committee Advances Three Anti-Gun Bills, Including Comprehensive Mag Ban\">H.R. 1236<\/a>, known as the &#8220;Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019,&#8221; is a Red Flag bill that simultaneously encourages more states to adopt a gun-seizure process while establishing one at the federal level.\u00a0 Per the language, authorities and family members would be able to petition a court to confiscate firearms from a person accused (not adjudicated, nor convicted) of being a threat to himself\/herself or others.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/2708\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-committee-three-anti-gun-bills\" title=\"House Committee Advances Three Anti-Gun Bills, Including Comprehensive Mag Ban\">H.R. 2708<\/a>, known as the \u201cDisarm Hate Act,\u201d the bill would permanently revoke 2A rights for anyone convicted of a hate crime.\u00a0 That includes misdemeanor offenses. \u00a0<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1186\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-committee-three-anti-gun-bills\" title=\"House Committee Advances Three Anti-Gun Bills, Including Comprehensive Mag Ban\">H.R. 1186<\/a>, known as the \u201cKeep Americans Safe Act,\u201d would criminalize the import, sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of large capacity ammunition feeding devices (LCAFD) aka magazines with a capacity exceeding 10 rounds.\u00a0 While there is a grandfather clause for current mags in circulation, owners would be banned from selling or transferring them to friends, family, children, grandchildren, etc.\u00a0 Federal funds would be made available under a \u201cbuy-back program\u201d to compensate individuals who surrender their mags to the government. \u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the legislation was passed along party lines, Democrats and gun-control activists hope that it will spark similar action in the GOP-controlled Senate. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the past week, we\u2019ve seen everyone from members of the House of Representatives, to Walmart executives and the Lt. Gov of Texas lead on gun safety,\u201d said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. \u201cIt\u2019s time for Majority Leader McConnell to lead, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, McConnell (R-KY) was quick to dampen expectations, saying that a bipartisan group of lawmakers are \u201cworking on coming up with a proposal that the president will sign. Until that happens, all of this is theatrics,\u201d according to<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/460781-house-advances-anti-gun-violence-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-committee-three-anti-gun-bills\" title=\"House Committee Advances Three Anti-Gun Bills, Including Comprehensive Mag Ban\"> The Hill<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo we do in fact await word from the White House about what the president is willing to sign. That&#8217;s important to a lot of my members. It also, at the risk of repeating a history lesson, is the only way we will get a law,\u201d McConnell added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan Gottlieb, the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, told GunsAmerica via email that this anti-gun legislative push is bound to backfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo far all Democrats have accomplished with their gun prohibition agenda is increase gun sales by 15% over the last month. This happens every time they introduce or pass new restrictions.
