{"id":115627,"date":"2019-09-11T10:52:42","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T14:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=115627"},"modified":"2019-09-11T10:52:42","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T04:02:10","slug":"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\/","title":{"rendered":"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Rifle Association is punching back at the city of San Francisco this week with a <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.npr.org\/documents\/document.html?id=6395044-NRA-San-Francisco-Lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" title=\"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019\">lawsuit<\/a> in federal court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NRA is suing the city and its Board of Supervisors for recently passing a <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=7568748&amp;GUID=DF64490F-D8BC-4BF7-A43D-287F02BECCCA\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" title=\"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019\">resolution<\/a> declaring that the pro-gun group is a \u201cdomestic terrorist organization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the nation\u2019s longest-standing civil rights organization argues that the \u201cgovernment cannot discriminate against citizens based on the viewpoint of their political speech.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution also calls on the city and country of San Francisco to \u201cassess the financial and contractual relationships our vendors and contractors have with this domestic terrorist organization\u201d in an effort to freeze out funding and support for the group. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling the whole stunt \u201cobviously unconstitutional,\u201d the NRA notes, in the suit, that this latest attempt to blacklist members and strong-arm financial institutions into cutting ties with the group simply won\u2019t stand.&nbsp; It didn\u2019t work when<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/aclu-backs-nra\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" title=\"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019\"> New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo tried it<\/a> nor did it work when<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/los-angeles-nra-blacklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" title=\"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019\"> city council members in Los Angeles tried it<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/student-suspended-gun-video-mother\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" title=\"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019\">Student Suspended After Posting a Gun Video Before Going to the Range with His Mother<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like with those prior cases, the NRA argues, the court \u201cmust step in to instruct elected officials that freedom of speech means you cannot silence or punish those with whom you disagree.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Board Supervisor Catherine Stefani authored the resolution (see video above).&nbsp; A former prosecutor and current leader in the Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Stefani told local news station <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/11771855\/san-francisco-officials-designate-nra-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" title=\"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019\">KQED<\/a> that the NRA is using fear and intimidation to push its pro-gun message. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When they use phrases like, &#8216;I&#8217;ll give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands&#8217; on bumper stickers, they are saying reasoned debate about public safety should be met with violence,&#8221; Stefani explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>San Francisco mayor London Breed has not signed the resolution.&nbsp; She hasn\u2019t vetoed it yet, either.&nbsp; If she doesn\u2019t take action by Sept. 13 the resolution will take effect.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a lawyer for the NRA didn\u2019t seem too nervous about the outcome of this case, indicating, as the lawsuit laid out, the First Amendment protects free speech. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This action is an assault on all advocacy organizations across the country,&#8221; NRA attorney William A. Brewer III told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/09\/10\/759333549\/nra-sues-san-francisco-after-lawmakers-declare-it-a-terrorist-organization\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-sues-san-francisco-after-city-declares-it-a-domestic-terrorist-organization\" title=\"NRA Sues San Francisco After City Declares It A \u2018Domestic Terrorist Organization\u2019\">NPR<\/a>. &#8220;There can be no place in our society for this manner of behavior by government officials.
