BELLEVUE, WA<\/strong> \u2013 A terrifying attack at a Chinese elementary school Monday that left at least eight children dead is more proof that madmen determined to cause mayhem don\u2019t need guns when their victims are helpless, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe attack at Chaoyangpo Elementary School in Hubei province was a horrific\nevent,\u201d CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb observed, \u201cand it was reportedly carried\nout with a meat cleaver by a man who, according to one account, had served time\nin prison and was recently released. Nobody is calling for regulation of\ncutting tools, and we think this terrible crime should remind people that it is\nnot the tool, but what is in the hearts of people who commit these heinous\nacts, that is really to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis unspeakable\ncrime can also serve as a reminder to those who are always willing to blame the\nAmerican firearms community for attacks at schools and other places that the\nUnited States is hardly the only nation where mass killings occur,\u201d he added.\n\u201cWhat happened Monday in central China was an inexplicable act of brutality\nagainst innocent youngsters, which can be said about any attack in any school,\nanywhere around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd let\u2019s not\nforget,\u201d Gottlieb noted, \u201cthat this was not an isolated incident. In January,\nan attack at a Beijing elementary school injured 20 children. In April 2018,\nnine people were killed in an attack outside of a middle school in Shaanxi\nprovince, and back in June of last year, a man fatally stabbed to children\noutside of an elementary school in Shanghai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe can overlook the political and\ncultural differences between our two nations and express shock and sorrow to\nthe Chinese people, and especially the families of those children who were\nlost,\u201d Gottlieb continued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHowever,\u201d he said, \u201cat the same time we\nmust remember that one depraved individual appears to be responsible. It would\nbe irresponsible on our part to blame Chinese society or even a segment of that\ncountry\u2019s population for what happened. One person did this, and we are\nconfident that he will be dealt with individually, rather than penalizing\nmillions of Chinese citizens for a crime they did not commit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere might be a lesson in that for people in this country who rush to blame guns and punish all gun owners when some individual commits a terrible crime,\u201d Gottlieb concluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n With\nmore than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for\nthe Right to Keep and Bear Arms (www.ccrkba.org) is one of the nation’s premier\ngun rights organizations.
