(Photo: Wikimedia Commons)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of scientists led by Dr. Amy Dickman of Oxford University\u2019s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit have published <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/365\/6456\/874?hwoasp=authn%3A1567156827%3A141%3A2226757753%3A0%3A0%3AzW43Cxc5qgpxWt9zMmD3ww%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-scientists-defending-trophy-hunting\" title=\"Scientists Publish Letter Defending Trophy Hunting as Protecting Biodiversity in African Countries\" target=\"_blank\">a letter<\/a> in the internationally respected journal <em>Science <\/em>calling for conservationists to acknowledge the evidence that properly managed trophy hunting protects biodiversity in many African countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCalls for hunting bans usually cite conservation concerns.\nHowever, there is compelling evidence that banning trophy hunting would\nnegatively affect conservation,\u201d the letter says. \u201cIn African trophy hunting\ncountries, more land has been conserved under trophy hunting than under\nnational parks, and ending trophy hunting risks land conversion and\nbiodiversity loss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well-regulated trophy hunting operations have had positive\npopulation impacts on a variety of species, including rhinos, markhor, argali,\nbighorn sheep, and many African ungulates, according to the letter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 130 scientists signed the letter, and even though they\nacknowledge that many of them find trophy hunting \u201crepugnant,\u201d they call for\npolicymakers to craft laws based on science rather than emotional reactions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe audience we want to take note of this is really policymakers,\u201d Dickman told the British <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/breakingnews\/world\/trophy-hunting-bans-bad-for-biodiversity-say-conservationists-947135.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-scientists-defending-trophy-hunting\" title=\"Scientists Publish Letter Defending Trophy Hunting as Protecting Biodiversity in African Countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Press Association News Agency.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/hunt365-staten-island-bow-hunting-deer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-scientists-defending-trophy-hunting\" title=\"Scientists Publish Letter Defending Trophy Hunting as Protecting Biodiversity in African Countries\">Staten Island Residents Want to Start Bow Hunting Deer After Vasectomy Program Shows Lackluster Results<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThinking about when they make decisions based on conservation, ensuring that it is actually based on the evidence and not just a knee-jerk reaction based on emotions because that is often unreliable in terms of the real impact of it,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trophy hunting and other tourism-related industries incentivize governments and residents to enforce anti-poaching laws and protect animals against poisoning, snares, and other kinds of illegal killing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter notes that in areas without trophy hunting and\nphoto-tourism, species like lions \u201cfare worst\u201d because unregulated killing can\nbe far more prevalent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But photo-tourism can\u2019t provide a more PETA-friendly\nalternative to trophy hunting. But until that alternative exists, she calls for scientists and\npolicymakers to promote regulated hunting that prioritizes the wildlife\u2019s\nwelfare over any individual hunter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Animal rights groups questioned the evidenced cited by Dickman and her colleagues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf trophy hunting is good for conservation, why are lions and other species popular with trophy hunters seeing such dramatic declines?&#8221; Eduardo Goncalves, founder of the Campaign To Ban Trophy Hunting, asked the Press Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trophy hunting is &#8220;cruel and immoral,&#8221; Gonalves said, and is nothing more than a &#8220;leisure activity for the very rich.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"
