(Photo: ATF Facebook)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A former security guard for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has been sentenced to 14 years in prison along with three years of supervised release for stealing thousands of firearms and parts from a West Virginia firearms destruction facility, local media <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldmailmedia.com\/news\/tri_state\/west_virginia\/former-atf-guard-from-martinsburg-gets-prison-for-stealing-firearms\/article_f0bf7a4b-ad5b-5e71-b5c0-8dfdcf344761.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-contractor-14-years-stealing-4500-firearms\" title=\"ATF Contractor Gets 14 Years for Stealing Over 4,500 Firearms and Firearm Parts\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher Lee Yates, 52, of Martinsburg, West Virginia,\nadmitted to having stolen the firearms from an ATF facility from 2016 to when\nhe was caught earlier this year. The contract worker used his access to the firearm\ndestruction area to steal and sell over 4,500 firearms and parts, including 60\npistols, 120 rifles, four automatic machine guns and three components to make\nrocket launchers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yates entered a guilty plea and received a four-year\nsentence for theft of government property and a ten-year sentence for\npossession of a stolen firearm. The judge also ordered Yates to obtain treatment\nfor a gambling addiction and prohibited him from entering casinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his statements at the sentencing and to probation, Yates\nclaimed that he stole the firearms because he \u201cgave into his vanity\u201d and wanted\nto feel important. He added that he turned his back on God and those close to\nhim, but he couldn\u2019t stop stealing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/lapd-atf-seize-over-1000-firearms-from-los-angeles-man-accused-of-illegal-possession-of-assault-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-contractor-14-years-stealing-4500-firearms\" title=\"ATF Contractor Gets 14 Years for Stealing Over 4,500 Firearms and Firearm Parts\">LAPD, ATF Seize Over 1,000 Firearms from Los Angeles Man Accused of Illegal Possession of Assault Weapons<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While he claimed that he didn\u2019t know all the rules\npertaining to firearms, he said he wanted to accept responsibility for that\nlack of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firearms linked to Yates have been recovered in 49 states, in Mexico and the Caribbean, and at crime scenes. When GunsAmerica <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/atf-caught-w-pants-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"atf-contractor-14-years-stealing-4500-firearms\" title=\"ATF Contractor Gets 14 Years for Stealing Over 4,500 Firearms and Firearm Parts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">reported on this story<\/a> earlier this year, the ATF refused to say how many of the stolen firearms and parts had been recovered. At the sentencing hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Finucane told the judge that the bureau had recovered 4,625 of the items in question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite Yates\u2019 tearful statement, Chief U.S. District Judge\nGina Groh questioned the authenticity of the defendant\u2019s remorse. She called\nYates\u2019 crime \u201cvery, very serious in nature\u201d and noted that Yates failed to\napologize to the communities he exposed to violent crime by putting firearms\nback into circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finucane told the judge that the ATF\u2019s policies for storing\nand destroying firearms aren\u2019t to blame. His lawyers asked the judge to \u201ctake into account the entirety of this man\u2019s life\u201d when determining the sentence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yates didn\u2019t help his case by lying to ATF agents and failing\nto admit guilt until presented with evidence, ATF Special Agent Seth Cox told\nthe judge. Cox also said that Yates hadn\u2019t helped with the recovery efforts and\nhad been uncooperative in the ATF investigation of the gun dealer who bought\nmuch of what Yates stole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judge revoked Yates\u2019 bond and placed him in the custody of U.S. Marshals at the conclusion of Monday\u2019s hearing, ruling that he posed a danger to himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
