<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Dowling is taking a stand against guns. Calling firearms a \u201cdisease\u201d that \u201cwe\u2019ve ignored for far too long,\u201d the healthcare executive is urging fellow doctors and hospital administrators to take \u201caggressive\u201d action against this \u201cpublic health crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dowling is the president and CEO of Northwell Health, New York State\u2019s largest health care provider and employer. He first published his stance in a blog post on Northwell Health\u2019s website<\/a>, and later took out a full-page ad in the New York Times\u2019 <\/em>national edition, according to HealthLeaders<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGun violence is clearly a public health crisis that we\u2019ve\nignored for far too long,\u201d he says. \u201cAs health care providers, we have an\nobligation to preserve and protect life. We have a rich and proud history of\nresponding aggressively and successfully to past public health crises.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaders, Dowling says, should be willing to speak up about\nissues affecting their community\u2014no matter the criticism they receive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo me, it\u2019s an obligation of people who are in leadership\npositions to take some action, speak out, and prepare their organizations to\naddress this as a public health issue,\u201d he told HealthLeaders.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dowling\u2019s multi-step plan calls for many of the same gun\ncontrol schemes being proposed by 2020 Democratic candidates, including,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Pressuring elected officials who \u201cfail to support sensible gun legislation.\u201d<\/li>
  2. Investing in mental health without stigmatizing. <\/li>
  3. Banning sales of firearms to people at risk of harming themselves or others.<\/li>
  4. Banning sale of firearms \u201cthat serve no other purpose than to inflict mass casualties.\u201d<\/li>
  5. Supporting national red flag laws. <\/li>
  6. Supporting universal background checks.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    As justification for universal background checks, Dowling\nlikens gun sellers to doctors. He argues that in the same way that doctors\nshouldn\u2019t prescribe medication to people without knowing their medical history,\ngun sellers shouldn\u2019t sell guns to people who haven\u2019t passed a background check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cIf there was a disease that was killing as many people as\nguns in this country, we would be mobilizing a national response effort,\u201d he\ncontinues. \u201cIt’s inexcusable for us to remain silent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dowling is either unaware of or knowingly hiding the fact that gun sellers must already subject their customers to background checks. It\u2019s also true that many mass murderers, including the perpetrators in Dayton and El Paso,<\/a> would not<\/em> have been stopped by a universal background check law<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dowling isn\u2019t the first doctor to come out against gun rights. The American Medical Association dubbed \u201cgun violence\u201d a public health emergency back in 2016, and issued a statement<\/a> demanding “action\u201d after the most recent murders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But doctors aren\u2019t united on this issue. Doctors for\nResponsible Gun Ownership has pushed back against the anti-gun bias in the medical\ncommunity and taken issue with the move to equate gun-related violence with\ndisease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cOrganized medicine\u2019s decades-long campaign to have\u00a0firearm-related fatalities considered as a public health rather\u00a0than a criminal justice issue is not evidence-based,\u201d Dr. Jane Orient wrote back in 2013<\/a>. \u201cIts reliance\u00a0on weak, even tainted evidence and spurious reasoning,\u00a0and its attempts to suppress or discredit contrary evidence,\u00a0is consistent with a political agenda of incremental civilian\u00a0disarmament.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
