As gun-related violence spikes in Toronto, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for adding more \u201ccommon sense\u201d gun restrictions to the country\u2019s already restrictive firearm laws. Toronto enjoys a relatively low gun-related homicide rate compared to many U.S. cities, but that hasn\u2019t stopped Trudeau from blaming guns for the city\u2019s crime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRecent shootings have underscored the need for common sense\nfirearms policy,\u201d Trudeau said at a press conference after a meeting with Toronto\nMayor John Tory. \u201cWe need action. But Mayor Tory and I agree that we can\u2019t\nsimply arrest our way out of this problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seventeen people were shot in one weekend last week, and this summer saw the most shootings ever recorded in one month in Toronto, City News reported<\/a>. The number of shootings so far this year (267) has eclipsed the number occurring over the same period last year (248), according to Reuters<\/a>. Twenty people have died as a result of this year\u2019s violence and 132 people have been injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officials in Toronto and Montreal have requested a\nnationwide handgun ban to combat the violence, but Trudeau stopped short of\npromising that policy in his statements earlier this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n But gun control is still likely to be a major issue in Canada\u2019s\nupcoming elections, and Trudeau acknowledged that gun control will be a part of\nhis party\u2019s platform, along with investing in police departments to help combat\n\u201cgun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Monday the federal and Toronto municipal governments each\npledged C$1.5 million ($1.13 million) to the Toronto Police Service to help\ncombat gun violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Tory believes that, along with a handgun ban, Toronto needs\na tougher stance on crime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have to address the root causes of gun violence and get\nmuch tougher with criminals who often laugh at things\u2014literally, laugh at\nthings\u2014like bail and sentences practices,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders agrees with Tory\u2019s\ntough-on-crime stance, but he doesn\u2019t believe a handgun ban will decrease\ngun-related violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe know that most gun violence in Toronto is directly\nconnected to street gang activity,\u201d he said on Twitter, adding that the\npolice will be rolling out a plan to combat gang violence in the coming weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I welcome Mayor Tory\u2019s initiative securing Provincial and Federal funds to help address gun violence in our city. They’re already breaking the law and the criminal law in Canada addresses all of those circumstances,” Palmer said Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The firearms laws in Canada are actually very good\nright now. They’re very strict.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Canada\u2019s gun control policies are much more restrictive than those in the United States, despite a thriving pro-gun culture in rural areas and western provinces. Some municipalities like Toronto totally ban handgun possession.
