Retired LAPD Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey describes herself<\/a> as a \u201cTV police expert,\u201d but that expertise (such as it is) apparently doesn\u2019t extend to guns or the laws regulating their purchase and possession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 20-year police veteran appeared on a Los Angeles local news station earlier this week in the wake of the El Paso and Dayton massacres, and she revealed startling ignorance about firearm function, background check laws, and police authority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho can ultimately get a gun is not the problem,\u201d she said.\n\u201cThe problem is high-powered weapons. It\u2019s weapons that go through walls in\nsome instances, armory that officers wear. It\u2019s the availability of a\ndouble-barreled magazine extended clips. Why would a regular person need all of\nthat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why, indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dorsey\u2019s gaffes weren\u2019t relegated to the \u201cfully-semi-automatic\u201d variety. She also demonstrated ignorance about the very laws she supposedly enforced during her time in the field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about the current background check requirements to own a firearm, she seemed to suggest that prospective gun owners must provide names and addresses for character references. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m completing that background application, am I going\nto give you the name of my neighbor that I don\u2019t get along with or somebody who\nreally knows me really well?\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m going to give you the names of the\npeople who say I\u2019m amazing and say I should really have a gun, when someone two\ndoors down knows I should not. That\u2019s why I think it\u2019s so important to do an\nin-depth background investigation and look not at the places people send you,\nbut at the places they don\u2019t send you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her solution would make Eric Swalwell proud. She argues that the same extensive background checks police officers must pass before joining the LAPD should apply to \u201caverage civilians\u201d who want to own a gun, suggesting that being a \u201cbully\u201d would likely disqualify a prospective owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith regards to background checks, what I think would be\nhelpful, is if we were to put a civilian through what we put police officers\nthrough, now that we\u2019re hearing from classmates and people who worked with\nthese [mass murderers], saying, \u2018He was a bully, or he was involved in domestic\nviolence,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a police officer, when I wanted to come on the LAPD,\nthey talked to my neighbors, they talked to folks I went to school with. Why\ncan\u2019t they do that for an average civilian before you allow them to have a gun?\u201d\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n
