He accidentally shot and killed 30-year-old Margarita Brooks after her dog began to run and bark at him. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur hearts are broken for the Brooks family and the police officer involved,\u201d Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson said during a press conference. \u201cEverything about this call is an absolute tragedy. Clearly this is not the outcome the officer wanted, nor is it the outcome our department wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMs. Brooks was never the intended target of the officer\u2019s\nuse of force, but we know as police officers that we are accountable for our\nactions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An unidentified caller reported a female passed out in a\ngrassy area behind a local business on Cantor Drive, Johnson explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHello? Are you ok? Is that your dog? The officer shouts, \u201cGet back!\u201d while retreating and pulling his\nsidearm. He fires three shots at the dog, who immediately turns and runs in the\nopposite direction. The dog was uninjured, but one of the officer\u2019s shots hit\nBrooks in the chest. The officer assisted with first aid until EMS personnel\narrived, but Brooks died at the hospital later that day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tarrant County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office ruled her cause of death a homicide, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dfw.cbslocal.com\/2019\/08\/02\/arlington-police-release-body-cam-video-officer-trying-shoot-dog-killing-woman\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"texas-police-officer-accidentally-shoots-kills-woman-while-trying-to-shoot-dog\" title=\"Watch: Texas Police Officer Accidentally Shoots, Kills Woman While Trying to Shoot Dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">CBS DFW<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending criminal\nand administrative investigations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks, her dog, and her boyfriend were regular visitors to\nthat section of town, and the dog had never before shown signs of aggression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was never on a leash,\u201d local store owner Justin Patton told\nCBS DFW. \u201cWe saw that couple every single day with that dog. It would follow\n\u2019em out to the tree, up to the Walmart. It would interact with people, just\nsniff, tail wag and stuff. It was never on a leash. Steven Smith, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcdfw.com\/news\/local\/Estranged-Husband-of-Arlington-Police-Shooting-Victim-Speaks-Out-523873521.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">NBC DFW<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;She had her struggles, but she was a good mother and\nshe loved those boys and her face would light up when she talked about\nthem,&#8221; Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith told reporters that he thinks the officer should be\nheld accountable for his actions, but he doesn\u2019t believe he acted with malicious\nintent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He didn&#8217;t wake up that morning thinking that that was going to go that way for him either,&#8221; Smith said. &#8220;We can sit here and say he could&#8217;ve done this, he should&#8217;ve done that, but at the end of the day the man has to live with it\u2026 Her life was taken from her and sending a man to jail isn&#8217;t
