(Photo: Gavin Newsom Facebook)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least ten bills are working their way through the California state legislature that would expand the state\u2019s \u201cred flag\u201d law, according to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-pol-ca-governor-newsom-supports-gun-control-20190625-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-red-flag-law-confiscation-orders\" title=\"California Moves to Expand 'Red Flag' Law to Allow Teachers, Employers, Co-Workers to Ask for Confiscation Orders\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>. The bills would, among other things, expand the list of people who could request gun confiscation orders and extend the duration of the orders from one to five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California Gov. Gavin Newsom is ready and willing to sign whatever gun confiscation schemes the legislature cooks up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor signaled his support at a press conference\ntouting the new ammunition background check law set to take effect July 1. He said\nhe hoped a number of legislative efforts \u201cto expand the scope of the red flag\nlaws\u201d would get to his desk. \u201cI expect they will be supported overwhelmingly\nupstairs,\u201d he added, referring to the legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the ten bills that would expand and\/or modify the state\u2019s red flag law, two have the most serious potential to affect California gun owners. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB61\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-red-flag-law-confiscation-orders\" title=\"California Moves to Expand 'Red Flag' Law to Allow Teachers, Employers, Co-Workers to Ask for Confiscation Orders\" target=\"_blank\">AB-61<\/a>, introduced by Assembly Members Philip Ting, Al Muratsuchi, and Eloise G\u00f3mez Reyez, would expand the list of people authorized to ask a judge for a gun confiscation order. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/hunt365-california-lead-bullet-hunting-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-red-flag-law-confiscation-orders\" title=\"California Moves to Expand 'Red Flag' Law to Allow Teachers, Employers, Co-Workers to Ask for Confiscation Orders\">California Becomes the First State to Enact Total Lead Bullet Hunting Ban<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under current state law, an immediate family member or a law enforcement officer can request a judge to confiscate a person\u2019s firearms if there is a \u201csubstantial likelihood\u201d that the person poses an immediate danger to self or others. AB-61 would further allow an employer or a coworker who has \u201csubstantial and regular interactions with the person and approval of their employer\u201d to request the order. It would also permit an employee or teacher of a secondary or postsecondary school, with approval of the school administration staff, to request a student\u2019s firearms be removed, provided the student has been attending the school for at least six months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second bill, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB12\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-red-flag-law-confiscation-orders\" title=\"California Moves to Expand 'Red Flag' Law to Allow Teachers, Employers, Co-Workers to Ask for Confiscation Orders\" target=\"_blank\">AB-12<\/a>, would expand the maximum length of a gun confiscation order from one year to five years. In determining the duration of the order, the court would consider how long a person is \u201clikely to continue\u201d to be a danger to self or others.
