Carrying a gun is just one aspect of self-defense. Even if\nyou are an outstanding shooter, unless you integrate a comprehensive defensive\nmindset into every part of your day-to-day life, you risk not only death or\ninjury but legal and financial ruin as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have a friend who is one of the most generally successful\npeople I know. From an Air Force pilot and accomplished musician to a wildly\nsuccessful businessman and entrepreneur, he epitomizes the term \u201cwinner.\u201d I\nonce asked him what he thought was the single most important quality in\nachieving success. His reply was immediate and succinct: \u201cAttitude is\neverything. You have to have the right mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comment arguably also applies to those of us who\nroutinely carry firearms for self-defense. Developing and maintaining the\nproper defensive mindset is vital. But what is a \u201cproper\u201d defensive mindset?\nDetails vary depending on whom you ask, but there are some fundamentals upon\nwhich most of us in the defensive training community agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awareness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As part of the USCCA family, as a member, subscriber or just\nan occasional reader of CCM<\/em>, you probably know how strongly we stress\nthe importance of things like awareness and conflict avoidance. The reason is\nsimple: It is far better (and certainly less expensive) to avoid a potentially\nhazardous situation in the first place than to have to deal with the physical\nand legal consequences of a violent confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awareness doesn\u2019t just happen; it takes practice. Look at\nthe people you see walking, sitting in restaurants or standing in elevators,\nnoses buried in their smartphones. A 700-pound grizzly bear could waddle right\nup next to them and they wouldn\u2019t notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We trust that none of you conduct yourselves in such a\nfashion. If you carry a gun, you probably tend to pay attention to your\nsurroundings more than most people. You might not realize it, but this is the\nresult of you developing a healthy defensive mindset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, not everyone has the same attitude as you. I\u2019m sure\nyou\u2019ve run into such people, perhaps even in your own family. When they find\nout you carry, they often ask if you are being \u201cparanoid\u201d or argue that your\nsafety concerns are at least somewhat exaggerated. But you and I are not\nparanoid. On the contrary, we recognize that bad things can \u2014 and do \u2014 happen\nanywhere, and we\u2019ve chosen to be as prepared as we can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, being alert can help us see danger coming and thus avoid it. A good analogy is the driver who doesn\u2019t merely focus on the car directly in front of him but keeps a sharp eye on the traffic up ahead, watching for that sudden stream of brake lights. Meanwhile, the idiot who is preoccupied with his smartphone or other distractions winds up rear-ending the car in front of him, which, in a case just this past week in my neck of the woods, was a police squad car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoiding Conflict<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Awareness is absolutely essential, but it is only the\nbeginning. All of us who carry also have an obligation to do everything in our\npower to avoid becoming entangled in conflicts that might lead to violence.\nAnd, in today\u2019s world, that covers a lot of ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days, there are certainly a lot of angry people\naround, the most obvious example being those suffering from \u201croad rage.\u201d It\nseems we have almost daily reports of some sort of traffic incident that leads\nto gunfire. But, seriously, who has so little control over his emotions that he\nbecomes hostile over someone else\u2019s driving? Unfortunately, the answer is \u201ctoo\nmany.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was once with a younger co-worker who seemed unable to\nquell his anger at others when behind the wheel. He spewed a running diatribe for\nour entire drive, commenting on just about every other driver within proximity.\nHe was yelling things like, \u201cMove it moron!\u201d (as if the alleged moron in\nquestion could hear him) and, \u201cLook at that guy!\u201d He also, of course, blared\nhis horn constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I finally had about enough and, since we were ahead of\nschedule, I suggested we stop for a cup of coffee. Without going into the\ndetails of our lengthy conversation, I did get him to finally admit that he\n\u201cmaybe had too short a fuse\u201d and should \u201cprobably lighten up a bit.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether he seriously modified his behavior going forward is\nanyone\u2019s guess; he took another job a few weeks later. But the point is that\nattitude matters and, if the above story sounds uncomfortably familiar, you\nmight want to think about making some changes in your behavior, because\ncombining a \u201cshort fuse\u201d with driving (let alone carrying a gun) is a\nprescription for disaster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conflict avoidance starts with something as simple as being\npolite and respectful to everyone you meet, which is a good rule to live by\nanyway. But active conflict avoidance means that we constantly monitor our\nimpending choices before we do something we might regret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A friend of mine who is a lawyer and a firearms instructor\nhas a question he advises all of his students to ask themselves before they do\nanything even potentially problematic: \u201cIs this really a good idea?\u201d He said\nthat if most of his clients had asked themselves that question in the first\nplace, they might not have to be sitting in his office, hearing him scream at\nthem, \u201cWhat in the hell were you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Words Matter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, we need to watch what we say in public, but we\nalso need to be aware of what we are posting online or in social media. Check\nout some of the statements made in the \u201ccomments\u201d sections of some internet\nstories involving guns, especially if they are reacting to a recent court\ndecision involving guns or gun owners. Many are simply silly, but a few are\ngenuinely disturbing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a side note, it is wise for all of us to remember that,\nshould any one of these folks find himself or herself in court one day, copies\nof his or her online comments will likely be read to the jury. Think about that\nbefore you bang out some inflammatory internet message. And I shouldn\u2019t have to\nwarn you about watching what you say in tweets and Facebook posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, hey, none of these people sound like you<\/em>, right?\nWe certainly hope not. But are you sure? Self-criticism, if it\u2019s honest, is\nusually uncomfortable and can even be painful. But occasionally taking a good\nhard look at yourself in the mirror is an important way to gauge your internal\nmindset and see if it needs an \u201cadjustment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another good way to check yourself is to ask those closest\nto you \u2014 family or close friends \u2014 for their honest opinions. If their\ndescriptions differ substantially from your own, you might want to give the\nmatter some serious consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legally Speaking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An effective defensive mindset must include preparing for\nthe possibility of defending yourself in court. You do have an attorney\u2019s phone\nnumber programmed into your phone, don\u2019t you? I am still amazed at the number\nof people who carry regularly but do not have a lawyer. This is like skydiving\nwithout a reserve parachute. If you do not have an attorney, get one. Or check\ninto the USCCA\u2019s Self-Defense SHIELD. Better yet, do both if you haven\u2019t\nalready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind, though, that having the best defense attorney\non the planet will be of no use if you conscientiously followed every\nself-defense tenet in the book (or at least believe you did) but then babbled\nto police without your attorney present. This is one of the most frustrating\nrealities that lawyers who handle self-defense cases face: knowing they could\nhave helped had their clients just kept their mouths shut and let them do their\njob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you intend to carry a gun, you should already have\nundergone some serious education on the complex legal ramifications of\nself-defense, especially all of the common-law principles governing the use of\ndeadly force. This should include the rules concerning dealing with police in\nthe immediate aftermath of an incident. Memorize them and then follow them\nreligiously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training is Crucial<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While not the primary focus of this article, I would be\nremiss if I did not strongly suggest that a true defensive mindset should\ninclude a commitment to regular firearms training. And \u201cI don\u2019t have time\u201d\ndoesn\u2019t cut it. Like losing weight or getting in shape, no matter how busy you\nare, it is up to you to make the time in your schedule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And remember that defensive firearms training is not limited\nto going to the gun range, which, ideally, you should do at least monthly. It\nalso refers to dry-fire exercises and practice in drawing from concealment,\nboth of which cost nothing and can be done at home almost daily. The more you\ntrain, the more intuitive your reactions will become. Why do you think Navy\nSEALS and other military operators train so constantly and exhaustively?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
