{"id":111551,"date":"2019-06-19T14:02:06","date_gmt":"2019-06-19T18:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=111551"},"modified":"2019-06-19T14:02:06","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T23:56:05","slug":"illinois-lawmaker-confiscate-assault-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/illinois-lawmaker-confiscate-assault-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"Illinois Lawmaker to Gun Owner: Instead of Fines, Maybe I\u2019ll Confiscate &#8216;Assault Weapons&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p>An Illinois state lawmaker lost her cool recently at a town hall meeting when a distressed gun owner asked her some very legitimate questions concerning a bill to ban so-called \u201cassault weapons.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=107&amp;GAID=15&amp;DocTypeID=SB&amp;LegID=115114&amp;SessionID=108&amp;GA=101&amp;SpecSess=0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-lawmaker-confiscate-assault-weapons\" title=\"Illinois Lawmaker to Gun Owner: Instead of Fines, Maybe I\u2019ll Confiscate 'Assault Weapons'\">SB107<\/a>, the legislation makes it \u201cunlawful for any person to knowingly possess an assault weapon 300 days after the effective date of the amendatory Act.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current owners of black rifles would be grandfathered in provided they register their semiautos with the state and pay a fine ($25) for each restricted gun in their possession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the gathering before state Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) and state Rep. Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield), one gun owner pointed out the obvious flaws with this registration scheme. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou want me to turn them over to the state police unless I pay a fine for each firearm and register them, then I get to keep them,\u201d said the gun owner to Sen. Morrison. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Morrison agreed, to which the gun owner responded, \u201cIf I get to keep it\u2013if I pay a fine and register it\u2013then, how dangerous is it in the first place and why do you need to ban it all?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The room erupted in applause because the citizen poked a big, gaping hole in the lawmaker&#8217;s logic.&nbsp; If \u201cassault weapons\u201d are, as anti-gunners argue, an existential threat to society, a fine and a registration scheme aren\u2019t enough. Morrison said, \u201cWell, you just maybe changed my mind. Maybe we won\u2019t have a fine at all, maybe it\u2019ll just be a confiscation and we won\u2019t have to worry about paying the fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the perfect corner to back anti-gun lawmakers into because confiscation of firearms that are in common use for lawful purposes is infringement.&nbsp;<em> It\u2019s unconstitutional!<\/em>&nbsp; Not to mention the fact that if a government actually tried door-to-door confiscation en masse it would be the start of the next civil war. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black rifles are not an imminent threat to public safety.&nbsp; Quite the opposite.&nbsp; They\u2019re the best chance we have for a tyranny-free existence.&nbsp; Take \u2018em away and we are lambs to the slaughter.&nbsp; Sadly, anti-gunners like Sen.
