If the group gets 766,200 by February, the ban will become one of the potential constitutional amendments on the 2020 ballot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group, creatively titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/surveys.signforgood.com\/bawn-video\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-assault-weapons-ban-100000-signatures\" title=\"Group Pushing for Florida 'Assault Weapons' Ban Hits 100,000 Signatures, Headed for State Supreme Court\">Ban Assault Weapons Now!<\/a> (BAWN)<\/em>, is \u201cconfident\u201d they can gain enough signatures to get the measure on the ballot by the deadline, according to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/politics-government\/article231374028.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-assault-weapons-ban-100000-signatures\" title=\"Group Pushing for Florida 'Assault Weapons' Ban Hits 100,000 Signatures, Headed for State Supreme Court\" target=\"_blank\">Miami Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHundreds of thousands of Floridians across the state are\ngetting behind this effort to place a ban on the ballot, because they know that\nthis isn\u2019t a partisan issue \u2014 this is an issue of public safety,\u201d BAWN\nChairwoman Gail Schwartz, the aunt of slain Marjory Stoneman Douglas High\nSchool student Alex Schachter, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amendment on the <a href=\"https:\/\/bawnfl.org\/banassaultweaponsnowpetition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-assault-weapons-ban-100000-signatures\" title=\"Group Pushing for Florida 'Assault Weapons' Ban Hits 100,000 Signatures, Headed for State Supreme Court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">petition<\/a> would ban possession of \u201cassault weapons,\u201d defined \u201cas semiautomatic rifles and shotguns capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition at once, either in fixed or detachable magazine, or any other ammunition-feeding device.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/florida-resource-officer-arrested-for-inaction-during-parkland-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-assault-weapons-ban-100000-signatures\" title=\"Group Pushing for Florida 'Assault Weapons' Ban Hits 100,000 Signatures, Headed for State Supreme Court\">Florida Resource Officer Arrested for Inaction During Parkland Shooting<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The measure excludes handguns, and it exempts all firearms\nowned before the date the ban becomes effective. But it also requires any of\nthose grandfathered rifles and shotguns to be registered with the Florida\nDepartment of Law Enforcement within one year of the ban\u2019s effective date. Gun\nowners must provide a sworn statement that they owned the firearm before the effective\ndate and provide the firearm\u2019s make, model, and serial number. Law enforcement\nis required to keep a permanent record of the firearms registered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for the measure to become part of the Florida constitution, it must garner 60 percent of the vote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders of Ban Assault Weapons Now! include former Parkland\nstudent David Hogg, Florida Congressman\nTed Deutch, and several survivors and parents of survivors of mass\nmurders. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Wz30rwOAkD0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-assault-weapons-ban-100000-signatures\" title=\"Group Pushing for Florida 'Assault Weapons' Ban Hits 100,000 Signatures, Headed for State Supreme Court\" target=\"_blank\">unlisted video<\/a> has been viewed a grand total of 746 times on YouTube and repeats the same talking points used by most gun ban advocates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are weapons of war, military style weapons that, frankly,\nwere not meant to be in the hands of civilians,\u201d says Dr. Joseph Sakran, a\ntrauma surgeon who appears in a BAWN video. \u201cThese are wounds we should never\nbe seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBanning assault weapons is not going to stop every mass\nshooting, but if we prevent even one shooting, it is worth it,\u201d says another\nwoman who appears in the video. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun control advocates in Washington State used the same ballot tactic last year to impose a slate of gun control measures without the legislature\u2019s approval.
