BELLEVUE, WA <\/strong>\u2013 The Second Amendment Foundation has joined in an amicus brief to the Colorado State Supreme Court in support of a case that challenges Centennial State gun control laws including the ban on so-called \u201chigh capacity\u201d magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAF\njoins the Firearm Policy Coalition, Firearm Policy Foundation and Millennial\nPolicy Center. The case is known as Sternberg\nv. Colorado.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nColorado General Assembly adopted a ban on so-called \u201clarge capacity ammunition\nmagazines\u201d as part of a sweeping gun control push that year. That statute is\nbeing challenged by the lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis\nis an important case because it is testing state gun laws against Colorado\u2019s\nstrong right-to-keep-and-bear-arms state constitutional provision,\u201d said SAF\nfounder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. \u201cOur brief provides a\nhistorical examination of why the right was specifically protected by the state\nconstitution, and applies that to today\u2019s context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n28-page brief was prepared by noted Second Amendment civil rights attorney\nJoseph Greenlee, and it discusses the history of firearms development that adds\nan important context to arguments that the state constitution\u2019s framers had no\nconcept of rapid fire repeating rifles. The amicus brief shows that to be\nhistorical nonsense, Gottlieb observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnti-gunners\nare constantly arguing that there is no historical support for protecting\nmodern repeating firearms,\u201d he explained, \u201cand our brief provides proof that repeating\nrifles capable of holding 15 or more cartridges were in existence long before\nColorado became a state in 1876. The framers of Colorado\u2019s constitution knew\nexactly what they were doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrankly,\u201d\nGottlieb stated, \u201cjoining in this brief has been a delight, not only because we\nenjoy working with our colleagues, but also because it offers SAF an\nopportunity to add a historical perspective to this discussion.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
