BELLEVUE, WA <\/strong>\u2013 Breaking news that a San Francisco-based business software company is dictating to certain retailers what they can or cannot sell at the risk of being unable to use its software was slammed today by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms as a form of \u201ccorporate coercion and social bigotry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Washington Post reported that\nSalesforce.com advised retailers such as Camping World to stop selling certain\ntypes of semiautomatic rifles and ammunition magazines or face losing the use\nof the company\u2019 business software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is outrageous,\u201d said CCRKBA Chairman\nAlan Gottlieb. \u201cHere are companies selling perfectly legal products according\nto the requirements of federal law, and just because those products happen to\nbe a certain class of firearms and accessories, the companies are essentially\nfacing being black-balled. Our friends at the National Shooting Sports\nFoundation, an industry umbrella group, rightly call this \u2018corporate policy virtue\nsignaling.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the published report, the new\nSalesforce.com policy \u201cbars customers that sell a range of firearms \u2013 including\nautomatic and semiautomatic \u2013 from using its e-commerce technology. The policy\nalso precludes customers from selling some firearm parts, such as \u201cmagazines\ncapable of accepting more than 10 rounds\u201d and \u201cmulti-burst trigger devices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people may think this is a great\nidea,\u201d Gottlieb observed, \u201cbut if it is allowed now because the targeted\nproduct is a particular type of firearm, what\u2019s to prevent this or another\ncompany from deciding sometime in the future to essentially blacklist another\nproduct it doesn\u2019t like? Suddenly, we\u2019re not talking about an affront to the\nSecond Amendment and millions of law-abiding firearms owners, we\u2019re talking\nabout possible restraint of trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen social justice warriors become\ncorporate bullies, maybe it\u2019s time for Congress to step in and provide some\nadult supervision,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re disturbed by this report, and we hope the\nsoftware company takes a deep breath and re-thinks this idea. Denying an\nessential service to a company because it sells some products that may be\noffensive to some people should be setting off alarms throughout corporate\nAmerica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour business may not be affected today,\u201d\nGottlieb noted, \u201cbut there are a lot of tomorrows over the horizon, and this\nsort of thing can become insidious really fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
