The\ntrigger, the functionality, and of course the accuracy\u2014all near the top of my 1911\nexperiences. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yeah, I know, if you\nlike 1911\u2019s you are&#8211;to many people in the firearms word&#8211;a Fudd. I rate each pistol on its functionality, and I\u2019ve used some damn fine striker-fired pistols including, yes, Glocks. And while I do have a special affection for 1911\u2019s, a 1911 that doesn\u2019t work is of no use to me or anyone else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the 5 Tactical works great. In fact, it performs as well as many 1911\u2019s I have reviewed that literally cost two and three times the price of the 5 Tactical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debuted in 2018, the\nDevil Dog Arms 5 Tactical features a five-inch, 416 Stainless Steel barrel, heat-treated\nand button rifled with a 1:16 left hand twist. Both frame and slide are heat treated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an overall length\njust shy of nine-inches, the 5 Tactical weighs in at a substantial 42-ounces. The pistol is sold with two eight-round magazines. I brought along three brands of .45 ACP ammunition\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalpremium.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"devil-of-a-1911-from-devil-dog-arms-review\" title=\"A Devil of a 1911: The 5 Tactical From Devil Dog Arms\">American Eagle<\/a> with a 230-grain FMJ bullet average 793 feet per second (fps) velocity*; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.browningammo.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"devil-of-a-1911-from-devil-dog-arms-review\" title=\"A Devil of a 1911: The 5 Tactical From Devil Dog Arms\">Browning<\/a> BPT range also with a 230-grain FMJ projectile, at 844 fps; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalpremium.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"devil-of-a-1911-from-devil-dog-arms-review\" title=\"A Devil of a 1911: The 5 Tactical From Devil Dog Arms\">Federal<\/a> Personal Defense HST, 230-grain hollow point, at 862 fps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At ten-yards offhand,\nI had no problems scoring one-inch, five-shot groups with each of the ammunition\nbrands, as long as I did my part. Of course, I pulled shots and recorded larger\ngroups. But I considered those groups my failings, not the 5 Tactical and ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 25-yards and from a rest, I shot two-inch groups with the above ammunition brands. But I ran out of the Federal Personal Defense HST early and found a box of <a href=\"https:\/\/le.vistaoutdoor.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"devil-of-a-1911-from-devil-dog-arms-review\" title=\"A Devil of a 1911: The 5 Tactical From Devil Dog Arms\">Federal Premium<\/a> Law Enforcement\u2019s Tactical+P, firing a 230-grain HST bullet at 925 fps. I printed groups of two-inches and tighter with the Tactical+P, and this was the ammo that scored the .85-inch three shot group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In over 300 rounds, I had one stovepipe with Federal Tactical+P, and once the slide didn\u2019t hold back when the magazine was empty. I was a little leery of the NBD\u2019s initially. They just didn\u2019t look like\nthey\u2019d provide good grip given the many flat spaces. However, I had zero issues\nwith the panels while shooting; my hands stayed firmly in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fan of 1911\u2019s though I am, I guess I\u2019m not a complete Fudd as I very much like the FDE cerakoted finish on the 5 Tactical\u2019s slide and frame. I also appreciate the way the black grip panels, sights, manual and grip safeties accent that finish. Wood panels and gunmetal-blue frames and slides function well, but I do prefer a more upgraded, modern look to my 1911\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" title=\"A Devil of a 1911: The 5 Tactical From Devil Dog Arms\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DDOG9-finish-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A Devil of a 1911: The 5 Tactical From Devil Dog Arms\" class=\"wp-image-110378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DDOG9-finish-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DDOG9-finish-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DDOG9-finish-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DDOG9-finish-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DDOG9-finish.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>  The 5 Tactical sports a tough and good-looking cerakoted FDE finish.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 5 Tactical can\nalso be had with a Black Oxide or a Two-Tone black and stainless finish. The pistol\nis available in 9MM, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the finish,\nthe .45 ACP versions of the 5 Tactical list for $1,099 to $1,199 on the Devil\nDog Arms website, with the 9MM versions at an additional $150. My FDE Cerakote\nmodel lists at $1,199.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From an internet\nsearch, I found the 5 Tactical for $100 to $125 below the prices listed on the DDA\nwebsite.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s still a fair amount of money, especially when you can buy a basic 1911 for around half that price. But I know this. I\u2019ve used customized 1911\u2019s costing anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 and while all of them were first-rate pistols, none of them performed any better than the 5 Tactical I tested. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are in the market\nfor a new 1911 and want one that works really well and has great accuracy, check\nout the 5 Tactical. If the 5 Tactical fits your needs, you might want to buy\nsooner rather than later, too.
