Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, announced on Monday her intentions to run for public office in Miami-Dade County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martin\u2019s death at the hands of George Zimmerman is widely credited\nwith sparking the Black Lives Matter movement, and if elected, Fulton plans to use\nher position to \u201cempower our communities and make them safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy time as a public servant began 30 years ago at\nMiami-Dade County. Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our\ncommunities and make them safer,\u201d she said in a\nstatement on Instagram. <\/a>\u201cBut the work is not done. I am proud to\nannounce that I will run to represent District 1 on the county commission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fulton\u2019s decision to run for Miami-Dade County commissioner\ncomes after years of activism with the Trayvon Martin Foundation, a non-profit\nFulton and her husband, Tracy Martin, established in March 2012, less the one\nmonth after their 17-year-old son was killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tracy Martin and Fulton told the Miami Herald<\/a> in 2017 that they were both considering runs at the local, state, and national levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fulton has stated repeatedly since 2012 that she does not\nwant to be in the public eye. She begins her campaign ad, \u201cAt first, I didn\u2019t\nwant to be the voice for Trayvon after he died. But I decided I have no choice.\nNow I\u2019m called to act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cI did not want this spotlight,\u201d she said while speaking at\nthe Democratic National Convention. \u201cThis is about saving our children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If elected, Fulton plans to tackle housing costs, mental\nhealth, and, of course, \u201csenseless gun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have to come together with some sort of plan to get rid of all of these weapons that are unregistered that are sitting around that people are just using carelessly,\u201d she told Washington State\u2019s KCTS9<\/a>. \u201cWe have to know the meaning of senseless gun violence \u2014 something that could be prevented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fulton\u2019s son was shot and killed in 2012 in Florida by a man named George Zimmerman. Zimmerman claimed that Trayvon Martin attacked him, and he shot the teenager in self-defense. A six-person jury sided with Zimmerman, ruling that the man could not be charged. A Department of Justice investigation also determined that there was insufficient evidence to charge Zimmerman with a hate crime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fulton believes the jury got it wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t lost \u2013 he was murdered,\u201d she told<\/a> a crowd in 2015. \u201cHe was murdered at the hands of senseless gun violence. He was murdered at the hands of racial profiling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She blames her son\u2019s death on hate, telling KCTS9, \u201cpeople\nhate you so much that they want to harm you; they hate you so much that they\nwant to kill you. How do we become a society such as that? How did we get\nthere?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2016, Fulton endorsed Hillary Clinton for president,\ncalling the former secretary of state the candidate best positioned to \u201cstand\nup to inaction from Republicans and indifference from the NRA\u201d on gun control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fulton is running against<\/a> Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver G. Gilbert III for the commissioner position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
