Frivolous lawsuits, financial regulation, and \u201csmart gun\u201d safety requirements have all been used by anti-gun advocates in an attempt eliminate guns by destroying the firearms industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, freshman Democratic Rep. Joe Morelle <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs6albany.com\/news\/local\/legislation-calls-for-tighter-security-requirements-for-gun-shops\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-democrat-threatens-extinction-local-gun-shops\" title=\"New York Democrat Threatens Extinction of Local Gun Shops with New Bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"announced (opens in a new tab)\">announced<\/a> a different kind of gun ban. Dubbed the Gun Theft Prevention Act, the proposed legislation would mandate strict security requirements on gun shops, impose stiff penalties for non-compliance, and hold shops accountable for crimes committed with stolen firearms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If implemented, the law would almost certainly force thousands of gun shops around the country to shutter their doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a press conference announcing the legislation, Morell framed\nhis bill as a \u201ccommon sense\u201d way to stop the \u201cmass shootings\u201d that have become \u201can\narticle of living in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Licensed gun dealers are not required to take the most\nbasic step to ensure these dangerous weapons don&#8217;t fall into the wrong\nhands,&#8221; Morelle said. &#8220;It&#8217;s negligent and it&#8217;s dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/california-court-blocks-ban-handgun-signs\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-democrat-threatens-extinction-local-gun-shops\" title=\"New York Democrat Threatens Extinction of Local Gun Shops with New Bill\">Federal Court Blocks Ban on Handgun Signs, Pictures at Gun Shops<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As justification, the congressman alluded to a gun shop that had been broken into seven times since 2007 and claimed that, in 2017, \u201cmore than 575 gun shops were robbed nationwide.\u201d His stats appear to originate from anti-gun Bloomberg-funded outlet <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/features\/gun-store-theft-trafficking-atf\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-democrat-threatens-extinction-local-gun-shops\" title=\"New York Democrat Threatens Extinction of Local Gun Shops with New Bill\" target=\"_blank\">The Trace<\/a>, <\/em>which conducted an investigation into gun shop theft in partnership with <em>The New Yorker. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the bill, all gun shops would be required to install \u201cbasic\nsafety precautions,\u201d including locked cabinets and video surveillance devices. Shops\nwould either be forced to retrofit their displays with secured cases or move\nfirearms from display racks to cabinets or safes every night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To enforce the new requirements, Morelle\u2019s bill calls for\nhiring 650 additional ATF agents to perform mandatory audits of all firearms\ndealers every three years. Shops found not abiding by the new requirements\nwould face suspension or revocation of their licenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/gun-shop-owner-dies-defending-store-armed-robbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-york-democrat-threatens-extinction-local-gun-shops\" title=\"New York Democrat Threatens Extinction of Local Gun Shops with New Bill\">Gun Shop Owner Dies Defending Store from Armed Robbers<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the worst of it: the bill would also repeal a portion\nof the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act by removing civil protections\nfor gun shop owners who \u201callow\u201d guns to be stolen that are subsequently used in\nviolent crimes. In other words, if a criminal steals firearms from a shop the\nATF deems did not have sufficient security measures, the shop owner can be sued\nif someone uses any of those firearms in a violent crime at any future point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that potential liability, insurance companies will be\nfar less likely to offer policies that local gun shops can afford\u2014if they offer\nany policies at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the bill doesn\u2019t stop with shop owners. It also includes\na long-sought gun control provision that would require gun owners to report\nlost or stolen firearms or face criminal charges. In addition, it mandates that\nall gun shop employees be able to pass a NICS background check. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill has been introduced but has yet to be officially filed.
