In a strange and unexplained course of actions, tech giant Google banned and then reinstated an innocuous ad by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), drawing ire both from Donald Trump, Jr., and from two U.S. Congressmen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President\u2019s son accused Google of \u201ckowtowing to\nleftwingers\u201d and \u201cblacklisting hunters\u201d when the company removed an ad from the\nMontana-based conservation group. <\/p>\n\n\n

Oh look, now @Google<\/a> is kowtowing to leftwingers & blacklisting hunters from advertising on their platform.<\/p>\n

Trump, Jr., also posted a\nletter<\/a> from Sen. Steve Daines and Rep. Greg Gianforte, Montana\nRepublicans who reached out to Google CEO Sundar Pichai after hearing about his\ncompany\u2019s decision to ban RMEF\u2019s ad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not only deeply concerned with this prohibition, but believe that it is a troubling precedent for the exclusion of an important part of our national identity,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cGoogle should immediately change this policy interpretation to uphold our hunting and conservation heritage,\u201d they continued, while also requesting a meeting with the executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident began when a Google representative told the RMEF that their promotional video had been banned because Google considers any advertisement that promotes hunting \u201canimal cruelty.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPost receiving your email, I checked the account and the ad\nand found that it is correctly disapproved for the policy,\u201d the representative\nsaid in an\nemail<\/a> posted by the congressmen. \u201cChad, allow me to explain that basis\nGoogle guidelines, any promotions about hunting practices, even when they are\nintended as a healthy method of population control and\/or conservation, is\nconsidered animal cruelty and deemed inappropriate to be shown on our network.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RMEF Communications Director Mark Holyoak told GunsAmerica that they were surprised to receive the email from Google since “we\u2019ve been pushing out the same kind of content that promotes ethical hunting for years.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holyoak said he’s not sure why Google decided to target this particular promotional video, but once they received the notice from Google, they immediately reached out to their state’s congressional delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google has since refuted their own representative and reversed\ncourse, claiming that their policy has never banned hunting promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGoogle doesn\u2019t have a policy prohibiting hunting ads. We do\nhave a policy against ads that promote animal cruelty or feature gratuitous\nviolence towards animals. In this case, we made a mistake and the ad is now\napproved to run,\u201d a Google spokesperson told Montana\u2019s KULR-8, the outlet\nreported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this isn\u2019t the first time Google has banned an ad simply\nbecause it features a positive view of hunting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we reported<\/a> earlier this year, Google took down an a promotion by Theodore Dziuba, a Republican running for the state Senate in California\u2019s first district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dziuba ran an advertisement on Google that included the word\n\u201cgun\u201d and linked to the campaign website, which included a picture of Dziuba\nholding a wild turkey he had legally taken on private property with a Remington\n870 20-gauge shotgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the RMEF, however, Dziuba couldn\u2019t reach a Google\nrepresentative or get U.S. Congressmen to go to bat for him. The tech company\nmaintained their decision, and his ad was never reinstated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether Google made an honest mistake in RMEF\u2019s case or caved to public pressure is anyone\u2019s guess. Hopefully, moving forward, the tech giant will more consistently enforce their policy and stop targeting lawful hunters and conservation groups trying to raise awareness for their businesses and organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n
