Kudos to President Trump who on Friday withdrew the U.S. from the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.<\/p>\n

An effort to globalize gun control via the regulation of \u201cconventional arms,\u201d the Arms Trade Treaty was approved by the Obama Administration in 2013. Thankfully, it was never ratified by the U.S. Senate so it never became binding here in the Land of the Free.<\/p>\n

But because former Secretary of State John Kerry actually signed the darn thing<\/a> at the behest of Obama, it was still a threat waiting in the wings. While GOP lawmakers in Congress passed amendments year after year<\/a> banning the Dept. of Defense from using taxpayer dollars to promote the treaty, which is the best they could do to keep it from gaining momentum stateside, it needed a POTUS to officially kill it.<\/p>\n

Trump did exactly that at the National Rifle Association Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Indianapolis, IN.<\/p>\n

“We will never surrender American sovereignty to anyone,” Trump said during his NRAAM address. “We are taking our signature back.”<\/p>\n

NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox praised Trump, saying<\/a> \u201ctoday in front of 15,000 NRA members, President Trump once again demonstrated his commitment to our Second Amendment freedoms and American Sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis commitment to un-sign the anti-gun United Nations Arms Trade Treaty that was forced on us by John Kerry and Barrack Obama, gives NRA members one more reason to enthusiastically support his presidency,\u201d Cox continued. \u201cDonald Trump isn\u2019t afraid to stand on the side of freedom and defend our God-given right to self-defense and we couldn\u2019t be prouder to stand with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres lamented the move<\/a>, saying that it comes at a time when we are witnessing \u201cgrowing international tensions\u201d and that the ATT is the \u201conly global instrument aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the international arms trade.\u201d<\/p>\n

What are the issues with the ATT? In a 2013 letter<\/a>\u00a0to Obama, pro-gun lawmakers highlighted the main problems:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The treaty failed to achieve consensus, and was adopted by majority vote in the U.N. General Assembly. This violates the red line drawn by the Obama Administration;<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. The treaty allows amendments by a three-quarters majority vote, circumventing the power and duty of the U.S. Senate to provide its advice and consent on treaty commitments before they are assumed by the United States;<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. The treaty includes only a weak non-binding reference to the lawful ownership, use of, and trade in firearms, and recognizes none of these activities, much less individual self-defense, as fundamental individual rights. This poses a threat to the Second Amendment;<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. The State Department has acknowledged that the treaty is \u201cambiguous.\u201d By becoming party to the treaty, the U.S. would therefore be accepting commitments that are inherently unclear;<\/em><\/li>\n
  5. The criteria at the heart of the treaty are vague and easily politicized. They violate the right of the American people, under the Constitution, to freely govern themselves. The language restricts the ability of the United States to conduct its own foreign policy and allows foreign sources of authority to impose judgment or control upon the United States; and,<\/em><\/li>\n
  6. The State Department has acknowledged that the treaty includes language that could hinder the United States from fulfilling its strategic, legal and moral commitments to provide arms to key allies such as the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the State of Israel.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If we\u2019re being honest, Trump has been a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to protecting the 2A during his first term. On one hand, Trump appointed justices to the Supreme Court to cement a 5-4 pro-gun majority, approved the repatriation and sale of surplus military guns to the public, and, as already mentioned, killed the Arms Trade Treaty.<\/p>\n

    On the other hand, POTUS instituted a retroactive ban on bump stocks<\/a>, flirted with the idea of a federal red flag law<\/a> and raising the age to purchase a firearm to 21, and failed to champion national concealed carry reciprocity and legislation deregulating suppressors.<\/p>\n

    Point is Trump is not the 2A stalwart the NRA makes him out to be. But that\u2019s okay. Because given the alternative, whoever it is that the Dems nominate to run in 2020 be it Comrade Bernie or Crazy Kamala Harris, Trump is still the best chance we have to ensure our right to keep and bear arms remains intact for future generations.<\/p>\n
