Whoever wrote that must be &#8220;mental,&#8221; at least if we are to believe the opinion of Alabama State Sen. Vivian Davis Figures.<\/p>\n<p>In a committee hearing this week on SB 4, a Constitutional carry bill, the Democratic senator who represents Mobile, accused supporters of the legislation of having \u201csome mental problems\u201d during an incoherent rant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[W]hy would you want to do certain things that really put people at greater risk?\u201d Sen. Davis Figures <a href=\"https:\/\/yellowhammernews.com\/dem-state-senator-second-amendment-advocates-have-mental-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"alabama-supporters-constitutional-mental-problems\" title=\"Alabama Supporters of Constitutional Carry Have \u2018Mental Problems,\u2019 Says Lawmaker\">said<\/a>, rhetorically, to guest speaker Todd Adkins of the NRA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou even want to repeal a part of the law that\u2019s in place now about carrying weapons into a demonstration, where everyone knows that the emotions are high,\u201d she exclaimed. \u201c\u2026And we also know (Arizona) Congresswoman (Gabby) Giffords was actually shot during that time, during a demonstration. Why would you want to take away the presumption of intent? That somebody could just shoot someone else and not even have intent, to repeal that. It\u2019s All About the Money!<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>None of those concerns have anything to do with SB 4, which would simply allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms without having to obtain a permit and pay the licensing fee.<\/p>\n<p>The blathering continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always gotten an \u2018F\u2019 from the National Rifle Association and that\u2019s a proud \u2018F\u2019 that I receive\u2026 I just don\u2019t understand the mentality of what you guys or \u2013 or what you guys continue to push to do,\u201d she said. \u201cParticularly, with all the gun violence that is happening, to allow a person to be able to get a gun who has mental problems \u2013 to me that says the person who\u2019s pushing that has some mental problems. They don\u2019t understand why people with mental issues shouldn\u2019t have a weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Constitutional carry legislation does not make it lawful for prohibited persons, including those adjudicated \u201cmentally defective,\u201d to carry concealed firearms. As mentioned, it simply allows law-abiding citizens to carry concealed as the founders intended.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really not that hard a concept to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.\u00a0Davis Figures is, to be modest, deeply confused about the issue.\u00a0 As noted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/alabama-sheriffs-oppose-constitutional-carry-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"alabama-supporters-constitutional-mental-problems\" title=\"Alabama Supporters of Constitutional Carry Have \u2018Mental Problems,\u2019 Says Lawmaker\">past<\/a>, opposition to Constitutional carry fails the smell test for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In Alabama, a background check is required at the point-of-sale when one purchases a firearm from a licensed dealer.\u00a0 Those with disqualifying mental health records will fail the background check and not be allowed to take possession of the gun.\u00a0 Additionally, they should be prosecuted for attempting to purchase a gun in the first place.<\/li>\n<li>Aside from in a vehicle, open carry without a permit is legal in Alabama. In other words, any lawful citizen can already carry a firearm without having to undergo another background check.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of law-abiding citizens, they\u2019re not the problem here! Criminals are the problem. You know, bad guy with guns! But they, as we all know, will carry concealed firearms irrespective of what the law says. Moreover, given their criminal history, they are already banned from merely possessing, let alone, carrying firearms in the first place.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/kentucky-constitutional-carry\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"alabama-supporters-constitutional-mental-problems\" title=\"Alabama Supporters of Constitutional Carry Have \u2018Mental Problems,\u2019 Says Lawmaker\">Seventeen<\/a> states have passed Constitutional Carry laws and, thus far, not one has descended into chaos and disorder. Not one.<\/li>\n<li>The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A similar bill to SB 4 cleared the Senate last year but got shot down in the House.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll see what happens this legislative session.\u00a0 Hopefully, lawmakers will see through the unfounded fears and nonsense being perpetuated by\u00a0Sen.\u00a0Davis Figures and her ilk.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">***<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/\" campaign=\"BuySellGA_Register\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Buy and Sell on GunsAmerica!<\/a>***<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cParticularly, with all the gun violence that is happening, to allow a person to be able to get a gun who has mental problems \u2013 to me that says the person who\u2019s pushing that has some mental problems.
