And as a way to separate himself from the crowded field of Dems angling to win the party nom and take on Trump in 2020, Swalwell has made his anti-gun crusade the centerpiece of his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will be the first candidate to say that reducing gun violence has to be a top three issue,&#8221; Swalwell told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/news-politics\/a27074594\/who-is-eric-swalwell\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">Esquire<\/a>. &#8220;Last year I wrote a bill calling for a buyback and ban on assault weapons \u2014 not just to ban future manufacturing, but to just take the 15 million that are out there and buy them back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How can the government purchase something <em>back<\/em> that never belonged to it in the first place?<\/p>\n<p>But even supposing it can, what would eradicating the existence of \u201cassault weapons\u201d actually do to reduce crime? The answer <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/15\/an-assault-weapon-ban-wont-stop-mass-sho\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">is virtually nothing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ucr.fbi.gov\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2016\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2016\/tables\/expanded-homicide-data-table-4.xls\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">FBI tells us<\/a> that in 2016 rifles of any make or model were used in approximately 3 percent of firearm homicides. Even as it relates to mass killings, the number of \u201cassault weapons\u201d used to carry out the attacks is relatively low.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-gun rag<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2012\/12\/mass-shootings-mother-jones-full-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\"> Mother Jones found that from 1982-2012<\/a> black rifles were used in only 14 percent of mass killings, debunking \u2014 unintentionally, I might add \u2014 the notion that AR-15s are the \u201cpreferred weapon\u201d of psycho killers.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way, one is <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycallernewsfoundation.org\/2018\/02\/20\/fact-check-are-most-gun-crimes-committed-with-handguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">about nine times more likely to get murdered with a handgun<\/a> than they are a rifle or shotgun or any other firearm. Also, don\u2019t forget that the second deadliest school attack in U.S. history was perpetrated by a killer with two commonly owned handguns. In 2007, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia_Tech_shooting\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">Virginia Tech shooter<\/a> murdered 32 people and wounded at least 17 more with a Glock 19 and a Walther P22.<\/p>\n<p>Ban handguns, then, is the answer? Because that\u2019ll stop the violence. Right? Wrong! Few people talk about this nowadays but the deadliest school attack in U.S. history was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bath_School_disaster\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">Bath School Massacre in Michigan<\/a>, which occurred in 1927, long before the AR-15 made its way to the market.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/springfield-xd-defender-unboxed\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">Springfield Armory XD Defender Series Unboxed at the Gun Counter<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The killer used explosives, including dynamite, to blow up 38 elementary schoolchildren and six adults at the Bath Consolidated School. Fifty-eight others were injured in the massacre.<\/p>\n<p>Point is an America without ARs &#8212; or even without guns for that matter \u2014 is still a dangerous place. Much in the same way banning dope doesn\u2019t stop heroin addicts from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=boot%20up\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">booting up<\/a>, restricting access to certain pieces of hardware doesn\u2019t stop bad people from doing bad things. Violence is inherently a people problem, not a gun problem. One would hope an elected official would understand the significant limitations of gun bans as a means to curb violence. But Swalwell completely misses the mark. BTW, Mexico largely banned civilian gun ownership, and how\u2019s that working out?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m the only candidate calling for a mandatory national ban and buyback of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons,&#8221; he recently wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/opinion\/openforum\/article\/Open-Forum-Why-I-am-running-for-president-13751477.php?t=c6d3e063db\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"swalwell-confiscating-assault-weapons-top-priority\" title=\"California Dem Running for President Says Confiscating 'Assault Weapons' is a Top Priority\">Chronicle op-ed<\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s bold and will cost money, but it is constitutional and it rightly treats gun violence as a life-or-death matter. Our children deserve better than an attempt to reduce or contain gun violence. Our goal must be to end it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Should we be surprised by Swalwell\u2019s ignorance? Not at all. Remember, this is the guy that suggested he\u2019d \u201cnuke\u201d gun owners who resisted his confiscation decree.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">And it would be a short war my friend.
