Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods lost $150 million in sales as a result of the company\u2019s anti-gun policies, according to a new report from Bloomberg<\/a>. The loss amounted to 1.7 percent of the company\u2019s overall revenue and has spurred the company to consider dropping hunting-related items entirely<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Edward Stack, the company\u2019s CEO and Virtue-Signaler-in-Chief, said the move was worth it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe system does not work,\u201d Stack said. \u201cIt\u2019s important that when you know there\u2019s something that\u2019s not working, and it\u2019s to the detriment of the public, you have to stand up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stack vowed in the wake of the Parkland massacre to stop selling \u201cassault rifles\u201d and \u201chigh-capacity\u201d magazines in its Field & Stream stores, and to halt all gun sales to anyone under the age of 21. The move prompted backlash in the gun rights community, and some gun companies like Springfield and Mossberg cut ties with the sporting goods chain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gun control supporters tried to fight back by intentionally shopping at Dick\u2019s to show their appreciation (sometimes called a \u201cbuycott\u201d), but the move didn\u2019t work. Turns out, gun owners were a major part of Dick\u2019s consumer base, and they don\u2019t easily forgive corporate attacks on the Second Amendment. The \u201cbuycott\u201d folks didn\u2019t stick around.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove is fleeting. Hate is forever,\u201d Stack said.<\/p>\n

But rather than reconsidering for the good of his employees, Stack has doubled down on his anti-gun position. He signed a letter supporting universal background checks, joined Everytown for Gun Safety\u2019s business council, and hired an anti-gun lobbying firm.<\/p>\n

As recently as February, Stack said he wouldn\u2019t change any of the decisions he\u2019s made in the last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talk about it internally and I often say: If we had a mulligan, we\u2019d do it all over again,\u201d he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dick\u2019s employees may end up paying the price for Stack\u2019s activism. Though the company\u2019s stock prices have risen overall, sales dropped significantly in 2018<\/a>, and that\u2019s been largely driven by weakness in the hunting category.<\/p>\n

While the Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods chain may not shutter many stores in the near future, Stack admitted that his Field & Stream brand may take a larger share of the hit. Many of those stores are locked into long-term leases, according to Bloomberg, and they\u2019re facing a major transition away from hunting and shooting sports and towards \u201cactive outdoor\u201d sports.<\/p>\n

Right now, it\u2019s anyone’s\u00a0guess whether kayakers and hikers can save Field & Stream from Stack\u2019s anti-gun crusade.<\/p>\n
