We will also use velocities that are obtained with common barrel lengths for each cartridge. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the 300 Win Mag, the load we will use is a Berger 215 Hybrid Target bullet with a G1 BC of .691 and a G7 BC of .354 pushed to a velocity of 2886 fps. \u00a0For the 6.5 Creedmoor, we will look at a Hornady 147 ELD-M with a G1 BC of .697 and a G7 BC of .351 pushed to a velocity of 2700 fps. We should also consider recoil and cost to shoot. Let\u2019s look at hunting loads.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hunting-loads-energy-based-range-for-deer-and-elk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hunting Loads: Energy Based Range for Deer and Elk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, let\u2019s establish some minimum standards for the energy required to take down a deer and an elk. \u00a0For the deer let\u2019s use the longtime standard of a 30-30 Winchester with an average 150-grain flat base bullet at 150 yards, this produces 1000 ft\/lbs of energy. \u00a0For elk let\u2019s use the old standard of a 30-06 firing an average 180-grain bullet at 400 yards which produces 1536 ft\/lbs of energy. No. \u00a0I love the 6.5 Creedmoor and shoot it at long range all the time at targets. I would also not hesitate to take it hunting understanding its limitations. \u00a0The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to win accuracy contests shooting targets. The cartridge and chamber specs submitted to SAAMI are specified for match accuracy. \u00a0There are a lot of over the counter ammunition and <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/firearms\/rifles\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-6-5-creedmoor-vs-300-win-mag\" title=\"6.5 Creedmoor vs 300 Win Mag: Ballistics, Range, Recoil\">rifle<\/a> options that are inherently accurate at long range. In our comparison the 300 Win Mag dropped less, drifted less and carried more energy at 500 and 1,000 yards. The 6.5 Creedmoor came close with far less recoil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-is-6-5-creedmoor-enough-for-elk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is 6.5 Creedmoor enough for elk?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a 143 gr ELD-X it stays above the 1,500 ft-lb elk standard to about 400 yards in our numbers.
