New Zealand has decided to pursue a nationwide gun ban, and freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, like, loves it.<\/p>\n

In the wake of a massacre that left 50 people dead at a New Zealand mosque last week, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said her government plans to pursue an aggressive ban on semi-automatic firearms, \u201chigh-capacity magazines,\u201d and any gun part that can turn semi-automatic firearms into \u201cmilitary-style semi-automatic weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n

AOC applauded the move and called on the U.S. Congress to do the same.<\/p>\n

In an address to the nation on Thursday, Prime Minister Ardern announced her intention to go after not only semi-automatic firearms but also a variety of gun parts.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday I am announcing that New Zealand will ban all military-style semi-automatic weapons,\u201d Ardern said at a news conference on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will also ban all assault rifles. We will ban all high-capacity magazines. We will ban all parts with the ability to convert semi-automatic or any other type of firearm into a military-style semi-automatic weapon. We will ban parts that cause a firearm to generate semi-automatic, automatic, or close to automatic gunfire.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn short, every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned in this country,\u201d Ardern said.<\/p>\n

The ban goes into effect immediately and will be followed by legislation next month. There is no grandfather clause, Arden said, noting that citizens should arrange to turn in the weapons banned under the new law because they never really belonged to the citizens in the first place.<\/p>\n

“On March 15, the nation witnessed a terrorist attack that demonstrated the weakness of New Zealand’s gun laws,” Ardern said. “The guns used in this attack had the power to shoot continuously. The times for the easy availability of these weapons must end. And today, they will.”<\/p>\n

She added, “We just want the guns back. … It’s about all of us. It’s in the national interest, and it’s about safety.”<\/p>\n

Initial reports<\/a> indicate that New Zealand gun owners can\u2019t be so easily intimidated: as of March 20, 37 firearms had been turned in to authorities. While the government has not announced how many newly-banned firearms exist in New Zealand, there are an estimated 1.2 million firearms in a country with a population of 4.8 million.<\/p>\n

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been an outspoken critic of the Second Amendment and the National Rifle Association almost since her first day in office. In February of last year, she tweeted, \u201cAR-15s cost less than an iPhone and are designed to kill groups of people in short bursts. NRA politicians are also cheap to buy, and kill hundreds of people through neglect over extended periods.\u201d<\/p>\n
