In a few simple steps your rifle will be ready for Arctic Warfare or just Winter Activities. In this case, a Springfield Saint AR-15 Rifle.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n

What if I wanted to camouflage my rifle?\u00a0 Furthermore, what if I wanted to camouflage it for some winter\/alpine\/snow activities?\u00a0 As it turns out, it is really pretty simple and easy to do.<\/p>\n

First off, why might we want to camouflage our rifle or any other gear?\u00a0 For starters, just that, camouflage.\u00a0 Perhaps we are in an environment where we want to blend in, be it hunting or even a tactical environment.\u00a0 Past that, while maybe not applicable to the alpine camouflage pattern we\u2019re about to do, is heat transfer.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever been somewhere hot and gone to pick up a black rifle that has been sitting in the sun, it is unpleasant at best.\u00a0 You\u2019d be surprised what a paint job will do.\u00a0 You could probably make that case that it adds an additional level of protection to the weapon, think about it as a sacrificial coating.\u00a0 And lastly, because it looks cool.\u00a0 People do things every day because it looks cool.\u00a0 There is no gate keeper, do your thing\u2026<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

Black rifles don\u2019t really blend in very well to any environment.<\/p><\/div>\n

A number of years ago I read an article about painting your carbine by the late Pat Rogers, over on the Lightfighter forum.\u00a0 In it he detailed how to go about doing a quick paint job to a rifle or gear that worked well, would hold up under use and was quick and easy.\u00a0 From that article I\u2019ve adapted the information to winter\/snow camouflage.<\/p>\n

For this project, you\u2019ll need two cans of paint and something to create a pattern with.\u00a0 And while technically you could use any flat\/matte paint, I would recommend Aervoe.\u00a0 Aervoe paint is the flattest in my experience and holds up really well compared to other spray paints.\u00a0 There are a number of places you can find it, to include DSG Arms.\u00a0 Additionally, Aervoe has a huge selection of \u201ccamouflage\u201d colors.\u00a0 The paint I\u2019ve chosen to use is the White (#975) and Urban Grey (#1083).<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

Most any paint will work, but I\u2019ve had the best results with Aervoe.<\/p><\/div>\n

If for whatever reason you can\u2019t find these paints, I would recommend a flat white and grey.\u00a0 Primer will probably work fine for you in this project, but will probably lack the same durability of the Aervoe.<\/p>\n

Beyond the paint, we need something to create a pattern.\u00a0 Technically you could randomly paint some sort of pattern or free hand design on your rifle, like stripes, but stencils are easy and can be found anywhere.\u00a0 I like using a piece of camouflage netting.\u00a0 You can just as easily use a section of net from a laundry bag, a limb with or without leaves or needles on it, pretty much anything.<\/p>\n

You’re also going to need a rifle. The rifle used in this example is a Springfield Armory Saint Victor AR-15<\/a> and is a new for 2019 model. It features a slimmer free float handguard with M-Lok. Watch for a\u00a0full review of the rifle in an upcoming issue of GunsAmerica.<\/p>\n

Before we get started we need to prep our rifle.\u00a0 *While it should go without saying, make sure your rifle is rendered safe and clear.*\u00a0 To prep our rifle we want to expose all the parts we want to be painted, such as the buffer tube, and under moving parts like iron sights.\u00a0 Simply extend the stock to its full length and flip your sights up.<\/p>\n

There are a lot of places we don\u2019t want paint, which need to be covered up or masked off.\u00a0 For starters, close your ejection port.\u00a0 Next, to keep paint out of the barrel, simply put a foam ear plug in the muzzle or mask it off with tape.<\/p>\n

Foam ear plugs work great to keep paint out of your barrel.<\/p><\/div>\n

Another important place we want to keep paint out of is the magazine well.\u00a0 If you paint the inside of the magazine well, you can run into issues with tolerance stacking.\u00a0 This can lead to magazines getting stuck and not dropping free.\u00a0 The easiest option is to place a empty magazine into the rifle.\u00a0 This will keep the paint out and give you a painted magazine at the end of it.<\/p>\n

While most \u201cmil-spec\u201d triggers you probably couldn\u2019t tell the difference if they were painted or not, this isn\u2019t the best practice.\u00a0 Nicer triggers will suffer from paint moving up into the lower receiver.\u00a0 To alleviate this, simply mask off the trigger and seal the tape along the bottom of the lower receiver where it opens around the trigger.<\/p>\n

Next, and this is super important if you don\u2019t want to have to come back later with acetone, we need to mask off our iron sights.\u00a0 If you are running fixed, or folding iron sights, tape off the front sight post and the rear aperture.<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

Only the front sight post and rear aperture needs to be masked off. Other markings will still be visible even when the rifle is painted.<\/p><\/div>\n

What about the little part below the rear aperture with the vertical markings?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 Those lines are there for establishing a mechanical zero before actually zeroing your rifle.\u00a0 And unless you are drenching your rifle in paint, they will still be visible after painting.<\/p>\n

What about paint in between the upper and lower receiver or the trigger pins?\u00a0 Don\u2019t go down the rabbit hole\u2026\u00a0 At the end of the day your rifle is controlling explosions which cycles the rifle.\u00a0 That explosion is plenty strong enough to break anything free that you somehow managed to \u201cpaint closed\u201d.\u00a0 And the subsequent shots will rapidly remove any high spots where the paint is.\u00a0 All that being said, lets not celebrate it.\u00a0 Mask off what makes sense.<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

I usually mask off the trigger and where it drops down from the lower receiver.<\/p><\/div>\n

At this point, we\u2019ve masked off the important bits of our rifle.\u00a0 This leads us to the question of accessories.\u00a0 What about my weapon light?\u00a0 Maybe a forward vertical grip or hand stop?\u00a0 Dealers choice.\u00a0 You can either paint them on your rifle, knowing that if you remove them you will have black spots where they once were, or you can paint them all individually and then assemble your rifle.\u00a0 Your call.<\/p>\n

Now that we are ready to paint, where do we want to paint?\u00a0 Ideally somewhere relatively warm with low humidity and no wind.\u00a0 A garage, free of vehicles or other things that can be damaged by over-spray, being ideal.<\/p>\n

Technically you can hang the rifle by the muzzle device and pretty much paint it all in one go.\u00a0 I find this to create tons of overspray and is best suited to outdoors in fair weather.<\/p>\n

I usually paint my weapons and gear one side at a time, laid out on cardboard.\u00a0 Arrange your rifle and accessories so that you can move around them from most angles.\u00a0 We are now ready to paint.<\/p>\n

To start, we want to paint everything white.\u00a0 This is done by making even passes with the spray can about a foot away from the rifle.\u00a0 Think about layering up a misting of paint rather than trying to get it in one pass, potentially leading to drips.\u00a0 Be sure to to hit it from all angles as well.<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

Numerous light coats is going to be better than 1 heavy coat.<\/p><\/div>\n

Once our rifle and accessories are white, we need to wait until the paint dries to the touch.\u00a0 This typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes depending on humidity.<\/p>\n

We can now move on to patterning.\u00a0 As I mentioned before, I prefer a small piece of camo netting.\u00a0 Simply drape the netting or pattern material over a section of your rifle and spray the Urban Grey across across it.\u00a0 Then move on to the next area until you have blotches of Urban Grey across the rifle, be sure to get all angles.<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

Laying camo netting or any other stencil across the rifle and gear will give you random contrasting shapes.<\/p><\/div>\n

You will now have a white rifle with grey shapes across it.\u00a0 Because of the way the net lays, there will be hard lines between the grey and white, this is fine.\u00a0 We\u2019re about to remedy this.<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

Because of the way the stencil lays, you will probably end up with hard lines between colors.<\/p><\/div>\n

The final step is to dust the whole rifle.\u00a0 Taking the white paint we originally started with, from about a foot or so away, lightly dust the entire rifle.\u00a0 This will soften any hard lines and go far in creating a very subtle camouflage pattern on your rifle and associate gear you’ve\u00a0been painting.<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

A light dusting with the original White paint will soften everything and lend to the camouflage.<\/p><\/div>\n

Since this has been accomplished one side at a time, wait a good 10 to 20 minutes until that side is dry to the touch, turn the rifle over, and repeat the same steps on the opposite side.<\/p>\n

While this all may sound complicated, it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 It is actually really simple.\u00a0 Having said that, I\u2019m sure there are still people out there with questions.<\/p>\n

\"Painting<\/a>

Two cans of paint, a stencil, some patience and less than an hours work.<\/p><\/div>\n

Like, what about degreasing my rifle first?\u00a0 If lubricant is dripping off of the outside of your rifle, wipe it off.\u00a0 If you\u2019re super OCD, wipe it down with alcohol or some other degreaser.\u00a0 It really won\u2019t matter much, anodizing is plenty porous for paint to grab onto.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t overthink it.\u00a0 It is next to impossible to mess up.\u00a0 On top of that, you can always brake out the acetone and clean the slate if you don\u2019t like it.\u00a0 And if you are really concerned about it, borrow one of your kids Nerf guns to take for a trial run.<\/p>\n

With 2 cans of paint, a little section of netting and less than an hour, you can come out with your rifle ready for Arctic Warfare\u2026\u00a0\u00a0 \u2026or just looking cool.<\/p>\n

Eventually, he landed in the Marine Corps in the late 90\u2019s. After a hiatus from the service to race the Baja 1000 a couple times, he reenlisted with the Air Force. Departing that he wound up in a large metropolitan Police Department for a spell before landing in the Security Contracting world. One constant through these experiences was gear and weapons. Having spent time in a lot of environments and with the opportunity to field a lot of equipment, he\u2019s grown fond of well-made gear.
