Nancy Pelosi Facebook)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>U.S. House Representatives introduced over the weekend their take on the new-and-improved \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban, and while the text of the legislation has yet to be released, preening gun-ban proponents like Colorado congresswoman Diana DeGette have outlined the <a href=\"https:\/\/degette.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/degette-sponsors-legislation-to-ban-military-style-assault-weapons\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new restrictions<\/a> on their official government websites.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1296\/text?r=13&amp;s=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assault Weapons Ban of 2019<\/a> (H.R.1296) echoes similar legislation introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein and others in the Senate, but unlike in the upper chamber, the House bill has a good chance of passing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Democrats once again in control of the House, now is the time to enact commonsense gun safety legislation,\u201d DeGette said. \u201cWe can\u2019t allow what happened in Aurora, or Columbine, or Parkland, or Newtown, or Las Vegas, to ever happen again. We need to get these assault weapons off of our streets and we need to do it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe, because in this Congress\u2026there is bipartisan legislation to have common sense background checks to prevent guns going into the wrong hands. It doesn\u2019t cover everything, but it will save many lives,\u201d\u00a0Pelosi <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/415863-pelosi-gun-control-will-be-a-priority-in-next-house\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on CNN\u2019s \u201cCuomo Prime Time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be a priority for us going into the next Congress,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/washington-state-sheriffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" rel=\"bookmark\">Washington State Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Gun Control, Receive Threats<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Tellingly subtitled \u201cto ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited,\u201d HR 1296 names 205 specific makes and models of firearms that could no longer be legally sold, transferred, produced, or imported. Along with this list, the legislation also bans<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Semi-automatic rifles and pistols with a military-style feature that can accept a detachable magazine;<\/li>\n<li>Semi-automatic rifles with a fixed magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds;<\/li>\n<li>Semi-automatic shotguns with a military-style feature;<\/li>\n<li>Any ammunition feeding device that can hold more than 10 rounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A revival of the 1994 Clinton \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban has been a holy grail of the gun control lobby since the original ban expired in 2004. Despite the fact that the 1994 ban resulted in no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2013\/02\/did-the-1994-assault-weapons-ban-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discernable drop in crime<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-stokes-assault-weapon-ban-20180301-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mass murders<\/a>, proponents believe a more restrictive set of regulations can decrease the frequency of incidents like Parkland and Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>DeGette, for example, claims in her press release that in the 10 years after the 1994 ban expired, mass murders increased by 183 percent. Unfortunately for DeGette and others, Politifact rates this claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/florida\/statements\/2018\/feb\/23\/ted-deutch\/did-mass-shootings-increase-200-percent-assault-we\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMostly False\u201d<\/a> and points out that it\u2019s based on \u201cflawed analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>But wait, there\u2019s more!<\/h2>\n<p>House Democrats won\u2019t be satisfied with an \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban, however.<\/p>\n<p>Another bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1112\/titles?r=13&amp;s=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H.R. 1112<\/a>, takes a page from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/new-york-anti-gun\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York gun control playbook<\/a> by removing the \u201cdefault to proceed\u201d practice for delayed federal background checks.<\/p>\n<p>Under current law, a gun dealer can transfer a firearm to a buyer if the FBI has not made a background check determination after three business days. H.R. 1112 increases that waiting period to 10 days, but then would require the purchaser to file a &#8220;petition&#8221; with the FBI. A gun dealer could only transfer the firearm after waiting <em>an additional 10 days<\/em> after the petition has been filed, which would increase the waiting period from three business days to 20.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/gallup-support-for-stricter-gun-control-drops\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" rel=\"bookmark\">Gallup: Support For Stricter Gun Control Drops<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>As we\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/fbi-bureaucratic-incompetence-nfa\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, background checks are often delayed unnecessarily due to bureaucratic errors. In addition, the FBI has instituted no appeals process for delayed checks and all NICS checks expire after 30 days. In short, H.R. 1112 could unjustly suspend the Second Amendment rights of American citizens for an indefinite period of time.<\/p>\n<p>Other bills would place <a href=\"https:\/\/demings.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-demings-introduces-bill-protect-law-enforcement-gun-violence\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rifle-caliber pistols<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1263\/titles?r=13&amp;s=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"house-introduces-assault-weapons-ban\" title=\"House Introduces 'Assault Weapons' Ban, 10-Day Waiting Period, NFA Requirement for Rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines<\/a> under the National Firearms Act. Both policies would require prospective buyers to undergo an extensive background check and pay a $200 tax stamp before taking ownership.<\/p>\n<p>In all, anti-gun politicians in Congress have proposed 20 pieces of gun control legislation.
