And they&#8217;re getting threats for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI swore an oath to defend our citizens and their constitutionally protected rights,\u201d said Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones. \u201cI do not believe the popular vote overrules that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Sheriff there is nothing, at this time, for me to enforce as it pertains to 1639,\u201d said Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich. \u201cAs it is now, 1639 is not constitutional, is being challenged in court and there is nothing for me to enforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To-date <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinookobserver.com\/news\/state\/continued-resistance-against-gun-control-initiative-attorney-general-defends-law\/article_b41e1d58-2f2a-11e9-a506-cfc6e78969a7.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-sheriffs\" title=\"Washington State Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Gun Control, Receive Threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least 21 of the state&#8217;s 39 county sheriffs<\/a> have said they will not carry out some the new laws which include raising the age limit to purchase firearms from 18 to 21, mandatory gun safety courses, enhanced background checks, safe storage requirements and a semi-automatic weapons ban.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington State Sheriffs Association <a href=\"https:\/\/washeriffs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-sheriffs\" title=\"Washington State Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Gun Control, Receive Threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted a statement in opposition to I-1639<\/a>. \u201cThe Sheriffs Association publicly opposed Initiative 1639 prior to the election,&#8221; it reads. &#8220;As the elected Sheriffs of our respective counties, we expressed our concern that the initiative placed greater restrictions on law-abiding citizens while creating unreasonable expectations regarding how such restrictions would be enforced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First and foremost, we are sworn to uphold the Rule of Law and the Constitution, it continues. &#8220;As elected Sheriffs, we are sworn to uphold all rights protected by the Constitution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe political grandstanding is disheartening,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/b186ce346d2d446babceaf15fec68e6c\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-sheriffs\" title=\"Washington State Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Gun Control, Receive Threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Renee Hopkins<\/a>, representing the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, who promoted the gun control package. \u201cIf they do not run (background checks), we will have a huge problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>See Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/nra-second-amendment-foundation-file-suit-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-sheriffs\" title=\"Washington State Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Gun Control, Receive Threats\">NRA and Second Amendment Foundation File Suit in Washington<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Now state Attorney General Bob Ferguson has given these sheriffs a warning. \u201cLocal law enforcement are entitled to their opinions about the constitutionality of any law, but those personal views do not absolve us of our duty to enforce Washington laws and protect the public,\u201d said Ferguson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will defend Initiative 1639 against any challenge,\u201d he added. \u201cMy office defeated the legal challenge to the previous gun safety initiative passed by the people, and I am confident we will defeat any constitutional challenge to Initiative 1639 as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The sheriffs have even received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khq.com\/top_story\/threats-towards-sheriff-knezovich-law-enforcement-opposing-i--under\/article_47cc3066-2982-11e9-a615-db919e19f830.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-sheriffs\" title=\"Washington State Sheriffs Refuse to Enforce Gun Control, Receive Threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">death threats from gun control activists<\/a>. Facebook&#8217;s Crime Check flagged a comment by a person, who has not been revealed, for saying &#8220;Sheriff Knezovich is going to get a bullet in his skull.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other posts from the same account continued. &#8220;Sheriffs that are non-compliant will be shot.
