{"id":105977,"date":"2019-02-12T18:26:34","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T23:26:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=105977"},"modified":"2019-02-12T18:26:34","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T19:14:04","slug":"fired-ford-employee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/fired-ford-employee\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH: Surveillance Video Proves Fired Ford Employee Acted in Self-Defense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former employee for Ford Motor Company has been exonerated for shooting a fellow union member in a self-defense incident in 2016, but he\u2019s still fighting to return to work, receive back pay, and clear his name.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-two-year-old Billy Cowart was charged with attempted murder after he discharged his firearm in the United Auto Workers 551 parking lot located on the south side of Chicago. He struck two fellow union members in the leg, but he claimed he acted in self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>The auto company and the union didn\u2019t believe him. Cowart has combat training with the U.S. armed forces and was a licensed CCW holder at the time of the incident. He\u2019d also worked at Ford\u2019s Chicago Assembly plant for nearly 20 years. None of that mattered, and Cowart was quickly suspended and then fired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe union here basically said, \u2018You got what you deserved. Deal with it,\u2019\u201d Cowart told <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2019\/02\/10\/for-employee-shoots-coworkers-self-defense-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fired-ford-employee\" title=\"WATCH: Surveillance Video Proves Fired Ford Employee Acted in Self-Defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local media<\/a>. \u201cI was crucified before the trial. I was the villain. I was the mad employee.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/good-samaritan-road-rage\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fired-ford-employee\" title=\"WATCH: Surveillance Video Proves Fired Ford Employee Acted in Self-Defense\" rel=\"bookmark\">WATCH: Good Samaritan Pulls Gun to Stop Insane Road Rage Incident<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwitimes.com\/business\/local\/man-faces-eight-attempted-murder-charges-in-uaw-shooting\/article_66dc60f9-1432-5c43-8118-bd32c02ed5c5.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fired-ford-employee\" title=\"WATCH: Surveillance Video Proves Fired Ford Employee Acted in Self-Defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">headline<\/a> at the time of the incident read, \u201cMan faces eight attempted murder charges in UAW shooting\u201d and notes that Cowart shot two men who had recently been elected to union leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/crime\/south-suburban-man-charged-in-hegewisch-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fired-ford-employee\" title=\"WATCH: Surveillance Video Proves Fired Ford Employee Acted in Self-Defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> claimed Cowart \u201cfled the scene\u201d and quoted police as saying the shooting \u201cfollowed an argument involving all three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance footage shown at Cowart\u2019s trial tells a different story.<\/p>\n<p>In the video, a man makes a beeline for Cowart and sucker punches him in the face. Cowart stumbles backwards and pulls out his handgun. He told local media that he shot towards the ground to stop the threat.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/no-charges-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fired-ford-employee\" title=\"WATCH: Surveillance Video Proves Fired Ford Employee Acted in Self-Defense\" rel=\"bookmark\">WATCH: No Charges for Police Officer Who Shot, Killed Vietnam Vet in His Home<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cHe retreated,\u201d Cowart said. \u201cI holstered my gun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After over two years in court, Cowart was found not guilty on all charges.
