(<em>Photo: Jillian Gilchrest Twitter\/Screensho<\/em>t)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A freshman state representative in Connecticut introduced a bill this week that would raise the tax rate on ammunition in the state to 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Representative Jillian Gilchrest announced the proposal on Twitter, explaining that her legislation would raise the price of a $10 box of ammunition to $15. She hopes the tax hike will reduce crime in the state by limiting the \u201cuse\u201d of ammunition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see this as a public health measure similar to what we\u2019ve done in the state of Connecticut with increasing the tax on cigarettes,\u201d Gilchrest said. \u201cWhen we increase that tax we\u2019ve seen a reduction in use. And so we want to continue Connecticut\u2019s legacy of being a leader on preventing and addressing gun violence and we see this as another step forward in that direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I\u2019ve introduced HB 5700, a 50% tax increase on ammunition. According to their report, there is currently \u201clittle empirical evidence to indicate how taxation would influence firearm-related outcomes, such as violent crime or suicides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, firearms and ammunition can be used for a wide variety of purposes, most of which are non-criminal and some of which are even life-saving. Gilchrest fails to address these other reasons to purchase ammunition. Instead, she doubled down on her original claims in a response to the National Rifle Association.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Every day, hundreds of Americans are killed with guns. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NRA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-50-percent-ammo-tax\" title=\"Connecticut State Rep Wants to Tax Ammunition at 50% to 'Reduce Use'\">@NRA<\/a>, I&#8217;m interested in preventing gun violence. Noir points out in a video that Gilchrest\u2019s tax increase will have the greatest impact on poorer Americans who need a means of self-defense the most.<\/p>\n<p>Noir observes that Gilchrest and other gun-control advocates want to \u201ctalk about gun safety, gun safety, gun safety,\u201d and yet, they want to tax \u201cthe means of people to use their firearms more efficiently and more safely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What do you think is going to happen when you make it more expensive to shoot?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n<p>Gilchrest\u2019s bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/asp\/CGABillStatus\/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&amp;bill_num=HB5700\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"connecticut-50-percent-ammo-tax\" title=\"Connecticut State Rep Wants to Tax Ammunition at 50% to 'Reduce Use'\">HB-5700<\/a>, has been referred to the Joint Committee on Finance, Revenue and Bonding, which is controlled by Democrats.
