The latest example began in New York, where legislators proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/new-york-law-would-check-social-media-before-issuing-gun-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-social-media-check\" title=\"Illinois Follows New York\u2019s Lead, Proposes Social Media Check to Purchase a Gun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a bill<\/a> that would require anyone purchasing a handgun to have their social media accounts and internet history reviewed by law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Now Illinois has caught the bug as House representatives introduce <a href=\"https:\/\/ilga.gov\/legislation\/billstatus.asp?DocNum=888&amp;GAID=15&amp;GA=101&amp;DocTypeID=HB&amp;LegID=115206&amp;SessionID=108\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-social-media-check\" title=\"Illinois Follows New York\u2019s Lead, Proposes Social Media Check to Purchase a Gun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a> (HB 888) that would require state police to \u201cconduct a search of the purchasers&#8217; social media accounts available to the public to determine if there is any information that would disqualify the person from obtaining or require revocation of a currently valid Firearm Owner&#8217;s Identification Card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike New York\u2019s law, which only requires a social media check for handgun licenses, Illinois\u2019 would require a check to purchase rifles and shotguns as well, as an identification card is required for all firearms purchases.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Illinois law requires applicants for a Firearms Owner\u2019s Identification Card to provide state police with \u201ca list of every social media account\u201d owned by the applicant.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/florida-police-department-used-social-media-to-spy-on-protestors\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-social-media-check\" title=\"Illinois Follows New York\u2019s Lead, Proposes Social Media Check to Purchase a Gun\" rel=\"bookmark\">Florida Police Department Used Social Media to \u2018Spy\u2019 on Protestors<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThese bills will give us additional tools to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of dangerous people, while respecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/week.com\/news\/political\/2019\/01\/28\/new-bill-would-require-social-media-background-checks-for-foid-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-social-media-check\" title=\"Illinois Follows New York\u2019s Lead, Proposes Social Media Check to Purchase a Gun\">said<\/a> Democratic Representative Daniel Didech, the bill\u2019s sponsor. \u201cI look forward to working with my colleagues in the coming months to pass these and other bills that will reduce gun violence and make our community safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opponents say laws like HB 888 not only restrict Second Amendment rights but First Amendment rights as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bill of Rights is totally under assault with this particular bill,\u201d New York Shooters Committee on Political Education President Tim Andrews said of the New York bill. \u201cIt\u2019s an invasion of privacy. Some would see it as a Fourth Amendment violation and a violation of the First Amendment, freedom of speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Illinois gun owners agree.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who&#8217;s going to make that judgement? What&#8217;s the parameter? What are they looking for?&#8221; Illinois gun shop owner Dan Cooley asked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wandtv.com\/news\/bill-would-require-social-media-searches-to-get-a-foid\/article_bae36850-23e5-11e9-b7d7-8785f8159e18.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-social-media-check\" title=\"Illinois Follows New York\u2019s Lead, Proposes Social Media Check to Purchase a Gun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WAND 17<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/anti-gun-vermont-governor-aclu-facebook-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"illinois-social-media-check\" title=\"Illinois Follows New York\u2019s Lead, Proposes Social Media Check to Purchase a Gun\" rel=\"bookmark\">Anti-gun Vermont Governor Under Fire from the ACLU for Deleting Pro-Gun Facebook Comments<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Cooley believes giving authorities a list of social media sites invades applicant&#8217;s privacy and pointed out that the existing vetting process is sufficiently rigorous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been vetted,&#8221; Cooley said. &#8220;Anyone who has FOID card has been vetted through criminal background system, the mental health system in Illinois.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The law is co-sponsored by Democratic Representatives Jonathan Carroll. It has been referred to the Rules Committee, where Democrats hold a 3-2 majority.
