Amanda Chase)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Virginia Senate passed legislation this week that would allow firefighters and emergency medical personnel to carry concealed firearms, provided they have obtained a concealed-carry permit and been given permission from the fire chief or emergency medical services chief.<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s sponsor, Sen. Amanda F. Chase, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/virginia-politics\/virginia-senate-passes-bill-allowing-firefighters-and-emts-to-carry-weapons\/2019\/01\/22\/56ed8012-1e8e-11e9-9145-3f74070bbdb9_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.42b6fb7412ad\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-emt-concealed-firearms\" title=\"Virginia Senate Votes to Allow Firefighters, EMTs to Carry Concealed Firearms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> that emergency personnel are often called to the scene of a volatile situation where law enforcement has not yet arrived, especially in more rural areas. As the mother of an EMT, she said that emergency responders might need to defend themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Democrat Sen. Jeremy S. McPike, opponents argued that allowing emergency personnel to be armed without training would pose a danger and create legal liability.<\/p>\n<p>The freshman Sen. Chase already made a splash this legislative session when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/virginia-politics\/on-the-senate-floor-with-a-gun-on-her-hip-republican-says-she-will-deter-violence\/2019\/01\/16\/75cf17c4-19d0-11e9-9ebf-c5fed1b7a081_story.html?utm_term=.a3d060666380\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-emt-concealed-firearms\" title=\"Virginia Senate Votes to Allow Firefighters, EMTs to Carry Concealed Firearms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared on the chamber floor with a .38 Special on her hip<\/a>. While quite a few Virginia legislators carry firearms on the chamber floor, most do not carry openly. I\u2019ve had people come up and try to touch me inappropriately,\u201d Chase said. \u201cAnd it [the gun] is a deterrent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Usually Chase carries concealed because she doesn\u2019t want to alarm her colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI respect that it may raise an eyebrow with people, so I always conceal-carry,\u201d Chase told the Washington Post. \u201cI don\u2019t want to raise an alarm for other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chase first decided to carry openly after one of her colleagues, Sen. Richard H. I\u2019ve had stalkers since I\u2019ve been in the General Assembly. I am going to continue to represent the issues that are important to my constituents, and I\u2019m not going to be intimidated by people who would try to physically harm me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senator said that many of her colleagues have given her a \u201cpositive reception,\u201d some of them calling her a \u201cbadass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others have been less supportive. Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw mockingly suggested she adopted the nickname \u201cSenator Annie Oakley Chase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she gets in an argument, what\u2019s she gonna [do], pull out a gun and shoot them?\u201d he said. \u201cI just think it\u2019s absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chase\u2019s EMT <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?191+ful+SB1012S1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-emt-concealed-firearms\" title=\"Virginia Senate Votes to Allow Firefighters, EMTs to Carry Concealed Firearms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bill<\/a> passed on a narrow party-line vote (21-19) and now heads to the House, where a similar measure was defeated by the Republican-controlled chamber. Virginia\u2019s governor is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/virginia-governors-gun-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"virginia-emt-concealed-firearms\"
