(<em>Photo: Nancy Pelosi\/Facebook<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Democrats didn\u2019t waste any time proposing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/universal-background-check-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"department-of-justice\" title=\"New DOJ Survey Results Throw Cold Water on Universal Background Checks, 'Assault Weapon' Ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">universal background check bill<\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/feinstein-assault-weapons-ban-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"department-of-justice\" title=\"New DOJ Survey Results Throw Cold Water on Universal Background Checks, 'Assault Weapon' Ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cassault weapons\u201d ban<\/a> when they took control of the U.S. House, but a newly released survey from the Department of Justice indicates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/violent-criminals-dont-get-their-guns-from-gun-stores-chicago-inmates-confess\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"department-of-justice\" title=\"New DOJ Survey Results Throw Cold Water on Universal Background Checks, 'Assault Weapon' Ban\">once again<\/a>) that neither policy is likely to reduce crime.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjs.gov\/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&amp;iid=6486&amp;fbclid=IwAR2wtA0kF5BOMrqsq8w2VX18RaiBXDfqKU8tc5W16Ku8LS4nUZSprlCnUY4\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"department-of-justice\" title=\"New DOJ Survey Results Throw Cold Water on Universal Background Checks, 'Assault Weapon' Ban\">2016 Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI<\/a>) found that the vast majority (about 90 percent) of state and federal prisoners obtained their firearms using methods that would not be affected by the background check legislation being proposed by Congress. But that\u2019s assuming that all \u201cother\u201d sources are private sellers and that all gun show and flea market purchases were made from private sellers. The real number is likely much lower.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers don\u2019t look much better for Feinstein\u2019s \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban. We\u2019ve known for years that rifles are used in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ucr.fbi.gov\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2016\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2016\/tables\/expanded-homicide-data-table-4.xls\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"department-of-justice\" title=\"New DOJ Survey Results Throw Cold Water on Universal Background Checks, 'Assault Weapon' Ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">near-negligible number of homicides<\/a>, and the DOJ\u2019s findings are consistent with that trend. The survey found that only 1.5 percent of all prisoners possessed a rifle during the commission of a crime.
