(<em>Photo: Wikipedia<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gun collectors, competitive shooters, and hunters frequently purchase multiple firearms in a short span of time, especially during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/nssf-explains-dip-black-friday-gun-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"credit-card-track-gun\" title=\"New York Times: Credit Card Companies Should Track Gun Purchases and Report 'Suspicious Activity'\">holiday season<\/a>. But a new column from the New York Times argues that credit card companies should monitor those purchases and report them to law enforcement officials as a way to prevent mass murders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf banks chose to use the systems they already have in place, they might decide to monitor such customers, perhaps preventing them from buying multiple guns in a short period of time,\u201d columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin wrote in a piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/12\/24\/business\/dealbook\/mass-shootings-credit-cards.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"credit-card-track-gun\" title=\"New York Times: Credit Card Companies Should Track Gun Purchases and Report 'Suspicious Activity'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sorkin claims to have reviewed \u201chundreds of documents\u201d proving that eight of the 13 most deadly mass murderers in the past decade used credit cards to stockpile weapons, ammunition, armor, and gas masks. He believes credit card companies should use their fraud tracking systems to track \u201csuspicious activity\u201d involving firearms and firearm-related equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have all the infrastructure in place,\u201d Joseph Moreno, a former federal counterterrorism prosecutor and a staff member of the F.B.I.\u2019s 9\/11 Review Commission, told Sorkin. \u201cA.T.F. is already involved in S.A.R.s task forces,\u201d he said, referring to suspicious-activity reports. \u201cIt would just be tweaking it to consider firearm-related information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sorkin points to James E. Holmes, the man who murdered 12 people at an Aurora, Co., movie theater, noting that he used a Mastercard to purchase $11,000 in \u201cweapons and military gear\u201d in the days leading up to the massacre. Along with a Glock, a shotgun, and an AR-15, Sorkin lists \u201cpaper targets\u201d and a \u201cshotgun sling\u201d among the items credit card companies should begin tracking.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nyt.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"credit-card-track-gun\" title=\"New York Times: Credit Card Companies Should Track Gun Purchases and Report 'Suspicious Activity'\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"New York Times: Credit Card Companies Should Track Gun Purchases and Report 'Suspicious Activity'\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-102098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nyt.jpg\" alt=\"New York Times: Credit Card Companies Should Track Gun Purchases and Report 'Suspicious Activity'\" width=\"269\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nyt.jpg 269w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nyt-71x150.jpg 71w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nyt-142x300.jpg 142w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>For their part, credit companies (for now at least) appear unwilling to begin tracking and reporting legal transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Sorkin laments that \u201cvirtually none\u201d of the major credit companies were willing to speak on the record \u201cfor fear of upsetting gun-rights advocates and politicians invoking the Second Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome raised the prospect that by trying to help they would be held responsible if the system failed,\u201d Sorkin noted. \u201cOthers made a slippery-slope argument: If they were to police gun sales, should they do the same for alcohol in an effort to prevent drunk-driving deaths?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/financial-attacks-franklin-armory\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"credit-card-track-gun\" title=\"New York Times: Credit Card Companies Should Track Gun Purchases and Report 'Suspicious Activity'\" rel=\"bookmark\">Exclusive: Financial Attacks Continue as Franklin Armory, RMR Bullets Report Discrimination<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Visa spokeswoman Amanda Pires, for example, told the Times that \u201cwe do not believe Visa should be in the position of setting restrictions on the sale of lawful goods or services. Our role in commerce is to efficiently process, protect and settle all legal payments. Asking Visa or other payment networks to arbitrate what legal goods can be purchased sets a dangerous precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, the financial industry has caved in recent months to social pressure from anti-gun groups.
