(<em>Photo: Wikimedia Commons\/Tony Webster<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The wife of a first-year law student at Tulane University shot and killed her husband earlier this week after she claims he tried to beat and strangle her. She told deputies that the abuse has been going on for years, and she has not been charged with a crime.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, who has not been named, &#8220;was able to provide a significant amount of corroborating evidence to back her statements,&#8221; the Jefferson Parish, La., Sheriff&#8217;s Office told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadvocate.com\/new_orleans\/news\/crime_police\/article_66f3d97c-fb0f-11e8-bf89-3b62a7dc2f0f.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"husband-abuses-wife\" title=\"Husband Allegedly Abuses Wife for Years, So She Kills Him in Self-Defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local media<\/a>.\u00a0She feared \u201cthat years of abuse would culminate in\u201d her death.<\/p>\n<p>The woman called 911 just before 9 p.m. on Friday saying she had shot her husband, 27-year-old Ian Mastin. Deputies found Mastin\u2019s body with multiple gunshot wounds, and he died at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The woman was taken into custody and interrogated, but the Sheriff\u2019s office says she cooperated with investigators and &#8220;provided a detailed and well-documented history of physical and psychological abuse\u201d along with \u201cmultiple physical injuries that corroborated her account.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She had not previously disclosed the abuse to law enforcement, friends or family.<\/p>\n<p>Tulane University Law School confirmed that Mastin was a law student in his first year. In <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2018\/12\/law-school-1l-killed-right-before-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"husband-abuses-wife\" title=\"Husband Allegedly Abuses Wife for Years, So She Kills Him in Self-Defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an email<\/a> to students, Dean David Meyer expressed \u201cprofound sorrow\u201d at Mastin\u2019s death and stated, \u201cwhile we do not yet know all of the circumstances, our hearts go out to those affected by this terrible tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/john-rich\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"husband-abuses-wife\" title=\"Husband Allegedly Abuses Wife for Years, So She Kills Him in Self-Defense\">John Rich Responds to Country Music Singers Pushing Gun Control<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The case has been moved to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney&#8217;s Office, which will decide whether to file criminal charges.\u00a0Attorney Richard Ducote told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwltv.com\/article\/news\/local\/jefferson\/metairie-neighborhood-stunned-after-wife-shoots-husband-in-domestic-incident\/289-622720821\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"husband-abuses-wife\" title=\"Husband Allegedly Abuses Wife for Years, So She Kills Him in Self-Defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4WWL<\/a> that the DA may decide to put the case before a grand jury for \u201cadditional assurance\u201d that no crime was committed.<\/p>\n<p>But if evidence proves she was acting in self-defense, she has the right in Louisiana to defend herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no question that if she was in fact being strangled and there is evidence to support that then the law recognizes her right to use deadly force to protect herself under those circumstances,\u201d Ducote said.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors of Mastin and his wife told 4WWL that the couple mostly kept to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw them,\u201d said a neighbor who told reporters her name was Sandra. \u201cJust a few days walking the dog and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very sad to hear that this can happen and the abuse was going on and you don\u2019t even know it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">***<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/\" campaign=\"BuySellGA_Register\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Buy and Sell on GunsAmerica!<\/a>***<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The wife of a first-year law student at Tulane University shot and killed her husband earlier this week after she claims he tried to beat and strangle her.
