Kevin Drum from Mother Jones believes he has the solution to mass murder. Drum wants to ban all semiautomatic firearms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would ban all semiautomatics,\u201d wrote Drum in a recent article<\/a>. \u201cThat would leave the gun owners of America with three types of weapons they could legally own: single-action revolvers, shotguns, bolt-action\/pump-action rifles.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s plenty for self-defense and for hunting, but pretty slim pickings for mass murder. Problem solved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Problem solved\u2026 Right? Wrong!<\/p>\n

The FBI generally defines mass murder<\/a> as \u201ca number of murders (four or more) occurring during the same incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sad truth of the matter is that for a determined and resourceful killer committing mass murder is easy. One certainly doesn\u2019t need a semiautomatic firearm. Heck, one doesn\u2019t need a firearm at all.<\/p>\n

About a year ago, a suspected terrorist killed 8 people<\/a> and wounded at least a dozen others on a crowded bicycle path near the World Trade Center in New York City. His weapon of choice? A rented pickup truck.<\/p>\n

And if Drum believes that this style of attack has limits in terms of its scale and effectiveness, he better think again. Nice, France, July of 2016. A Tunisian man runs a 19-ton cargo truck<\/a> into throngs of revelers celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais. When the\u00a0truck, badly damaged after its carnage-inducing ride, finally grinds to a halt 86 people would lose their lives and 434 more would be wounded.<\/p>\n

The root cause of mass murder isn\u2019t guns, it\u2019s evil! And in the majority of instances, there is only one surefire way to stop evil in action. The use of force \u2014 deadly force<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Which means a responsible and conscientious citizen needs to be prepared to kill evildoers to save lives. Once one understands this any argument for subarming<\/a> the law-abiding, another way to say place arbitrary restrictions on the type of firearms we can possess for self-defense, falls apart.<\/p>\n

Because to ban semiautomatics is to inhibit one\u2019s ability to confront and stop arsonists, rapists and, yes, mass murderers. These creeps already have a distinct advantage, as they have time to plan and prepare and plot out their depredations.\u00a0 Arguing that we should engage them with a narrow set of arms instead of ones more optimally suited for the job is the\u00a0equivalent of asking us to jump in a boxing ring with one hand tied behind our backs.<\/p>\n

What’s ironic, though, is that\u00a0Drum doesn’t have a problem with law enforcement or the military using semiautomatics.<\/p>\n

Lott: FBI Underreports Good Guys with Guns Stopping Active Shooters<\/a><\/h2>\n

He wrote, \u201cBut don\u2019t worry, gun nuts. This [banning semiautomatics] will never happen and I have zero power to make it happen. It\u2019s just a suggestion to gun control advocates that they should think bigger. No one outside of the military or law enforcement really needs the high-speed shooting of a semiautomatic. What they need is low-speed shooting and better training.\u201d<\/p>\n

I say that’s ironic because first responders aren’t always the first ones to respond to an attack.\u00a0\u00a0Citizens at the scene are. (Wonder if Drum knows that concealed carriers stopped 11.5 percent of active shooter incidents<\/a> from 2000-2017? Can you imagine what that percentage would be if there was no multi-million dollar anti-gun crusade to suppress gun ownership in the U.S. and the government actually worked to empower people to keep and bear arms?) Logic would dictate that citizens are the ones who need<\/em>\u00a0to be fully armed more so than the cleanup crew that shows up after the killing’s done.<\/p>\n

GunsAmerica reports on defensive gun uses<\/a> all the time.\u00a0 Instances where law-abiding citizens use force, including deadly force, to protect themselves, their family and their property.\u00a0 It happens, by some estimates<\/a>, millions of times each year.\u00a0 So, yeah, what Drum and other gun-control proponents are ultimately doing by pushing a ban on semi-autos is to make what is already a perilous task all the more perilous.<\/p>\n
