California Rep. Eric Swalwell (D) believes an \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban isn\u2019t enough. He wants to confiscate all semi-automatic rifles, and he\u2019s willing to use any means necessary to achieve his gun-free utopic vision.<\/p>\n

Swalwell penned an op-ed<\/a> back in May that calls for a nationwide, Australian-style gun buyback-confiscation-prosecution scheme that would cost taxpayers a whopping $15 billion. Now that the Democrats have a majority in Congress, the piece has been circulating as evidence against the Dems \u201cwe don\u2019t want to take your guns\u201d charade.<\/p>\n

In response to a tweet criticizing Swalwell\u2019s plan, the representative had this to say:<\/p>\n

And it would be a short war my friend. The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they\u2019re legit. I\u2019m sure if we talked we could find common ground to protect our families and communities.<\/p>\n

Predictably (and rightly), Swalwell\u2019s response set off a firestorm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t need AR-15s because the government isn\u2019t tyrannical, and, anyway, if you try to stop us taking them we will nuke you\u201d is my favorite of all the gun control talking points.<\/p>\n

The argument that you would go to war with your government if an assault weapons ban was in place is ludicrous and inflames the gun debate. Fair question. Rifles. They\u2019re more powerful and cause more carnage when used with a pistol-grip. See @ScottPelley<\/a> @60Minutes<\/a> piece. To reduce semi-auto pistol deaths I\u2019d have universal background checks and mandatory reporting on mental health.<\/p>\n

Swalwell\u2019s tweets might be ridiculous, but his gun buyback program is sure to get a serious look from Dem House leadership over the next two years. And if the anti-gun lobby pulls off what the GOP accomplished in 2016? Who knows what might happen?<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a telling quote from the congressman\u2019s May op-ed:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s something\u00a0new and different about the surviving Parkland high schoolers\u2019 demands. They dismiss the moral equivalence we\u2019ve made for far too long regarding the Second Amendment. I’ve been guilty of it myself, telling constituents and reporters that ‘we can protect the Second Amendment and protect lives.’<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Parkland teens have taught us there is no right more\u00a0important than every student\u2019s right to come home after class. The right to live is\u00a0supreme over any other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Including, apparently, the right to live in a free country.<\/p>\n
