The draconian ballot measure known as Initiative 1639 passed into law this week, garnering 60 percent of the votes.<\/p>\n<p>I-1639 bans the sale of semiautomatic rifles to adults under the age of 21, creates a registry of gun owners, establishes a 10-day waiting period for certain purchases, holds gun owners liable for failing to secure firearms, and allows the state to charge a $25 fee on the sale of \u201cassault rifles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I-1639 defines \u201cassault rifle\u201d as \u201cAny rifle which utilizes a portion of the energy of a firing cartridge to extract the fired cartridge case and chamber the next round, and which requires a separate pull of the trigger to fire each cartridge.\u201d Included in this category is any semiautomatic long gun chambered in .22LR.<\/p>\n<p><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"width: 0px;overflow: hidden;line-height: 0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gun stores in the Evergreen State are already prepping for the rollout of I-1639 which officially takes effect on July 1, 2019. Except for the age restriction, that takes effect on Jan. 1, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now we&#8217;ve got a law that&#8217;s going to cause problems for us and it&#8217;s going to cause problems for consumers and the impact on crime is going to be zero,\u201d said Wade Gaughran, the owner of Wade\u2019s Eastside Guns in King County, during an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/gun-dealers-brace-for-new-washington-gun-safety-law\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"draconian-i-1639-ballot-measure-passes-washington\" title=\"Draconian I-1639 Ballot Measure Passes in Washington\">KOMONews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaughran believes that while folks may rush out to purchase firearms before the start date, the overall effect on sales will be negative.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So there&#8217;s going to be a rush for people buying guns and beat the law to the punch but I think ultimately though it will have a negative effect for a while on gun sales,\u201d explained Gaughran.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97978\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/I-1639.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"draconian-i-1639-ballot-measure-passes-washington\" title=\"Draconian I-1639 Ballot Measure Passes in Washington\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97978\" title=\"Draconian I-1639 Ballot Measure Passes in Washington\" class=\"size-large wp-image-97978\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/I-1639-1024x457.png\" alt=\"Draconian I-1639 Ballot Measure Passes in Washington\" width=\"1024\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/I-1639-1024x457.png 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/I-1639-150x67.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/I-1639-400x179.png 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/I-1639-768x343.png 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/I-1639.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-97978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What the NRA-ILA is saying about I-1639.
