What a Wicked Looking Crash Axe from PROOF Research

Check out all of articles in the Fall edition of Long Range Shooting, GunsAmerica’s newest specialty publication.

A joint project between precision rifle manufacturer PROOF Research and Jake Hoback Knives, the PROOF of Life Axe is wickedness epitomized.  Just check it out.  I’m scared just looking at it.  LOL.

Custom knifemaker Jake Hoback talked about the collaboration that spawned this menacing awesomeness.

“This was a unique collaboration,” stated Hoback, in a press release. “PROOF Research supplied the technology expertise and composite materials. Their design input was simple and concise: ‘In terms of fighting functionality, materials, and overall design – produce the highest-performance axe regardless of cost.’ Mission accomplished.”

Hoback explained that the design is one-third tomahawk, one-third crash axe, and one-third ultra-light axe.

Machined from S7 tool steel,  it features skeletonized cutouts that reduce the weight to a not-so-heavy 18 ounces.  The result is a tool that is heavy enough for extreme use but light enough for on-the-go situations.

What are your thoughts?

The scales are made from aerospace-grade carbon fiber and are affixed to an ergonomically designed handle that promises to leave the user with no hot spots, no blisters, no pain during extended use.

And maybe the coolest part of all is that there’s a two-tier grind on the axe, a stouter edge on the top half for hard use and a finer one on the bottom half for precision cutting.  It’s a medieval multi-tool!

“Our customers fit into one or both of two niches,” said Derek McDonald, Chief Marketing Officer for PROOF Research, “those whose profession requires the absolute highest performance, and those who demand the very best and are willing to make that investment.

“The PROOF of Life axe is a fit for both of those customers and also happens to be a very nice collectible for die-hard fans of both Jake Hoback Knives and PROOF Research,” he added.

MSRP on it is $750.  Not cheap.  And I suppose that’s the downside.  But, as we like to say, you get what you pay for.

If it tickles your fancy go for it.
That kinda money would buy me a g41 with mods and mags and still have enough left to add a cold steel smatchet, lol

$700.00????? No thanks, this looks like a cosplay prop I will stick with my Eastwood all steel for a LOT less. BTW good luck trying to cut through seasoned Madrona with that!

Do you keep slamming at the Zombie with the “axe” attached to the gun or do you detach it and slash back at the Zombie and hope for the best!??

You can’t carry that in your passenger compartment..It’s an axe..That would be some kind of felony or the such..It would be classified by a Police officer as a weapon..Good Luck with that…

$750 for an over glorifide hatchet…… I think not!

A mall ninja’s wet dream lol.

“You get what you pay for”.
Now seriously, are you sure that’s a proper line here Mr. Blannelberry?
There are many Axe’s out there for far less and will do everything that thing will.
I have no issue with the price, it’s a free market, but I DO take issue with that statement.
It’s disingenuous, I CAN pay less and get just as good for the given ‘purpose’ of the tool.
If you want to talk ‘collectors’, fine, I get that.
    But please keep it real.

Worthless fantasy toy for someone with more money than brains that spends their nights tokin up and daydreaming of being a player in the “Game of Thrones” vid game. Too funny that anyone would consider actually using one of these for sny real world purpose. Buy a Gransfors Bruks Hunters axe, a $5 Lansky round stone and learn how to use them.

    It’s not an axe.
    It’s art (at best)
    Call it what it is.
The ‘artist’ should sign and number them.
So it can be hung on a wall.
At 18 ounces that’s all it’s good for.

Guess I jus don’t see the need for a $700. ax. That will buy one heck of a chainsaw.

    • Scotty Gunn October 6, 2017, 2:08 pm

      Or a decent carry gun.

  • Scott October 6, 2017, 8:14 am

Not all of us want to carry something that looks like a ‘fantasy axe’. Too many angles and cut-outs that can snag during use. I’d suggest taking a look at RMJ Tactical for a clean, durable and efficient design — and at $200 less.

Would like to have seen more than one pic. What are it’s dimensions? What is S7 steel on the Rockwell scale and please send me one so I can put it through it’s paces! 🙂
