Indianapolis Metro Police (IMP) are investigating a fatal road rage shooting that claimed the life of a 29-year-old man on the southeast side of the city. The incident occurred this week near Emerson and Thompson Road.

The victim, who was recently married, died after being shot during a confrontation between two drivers. Witnesses reported that the altercation involved a black Honda and a white Chevy pickup truck.

Police arrived at the scene quickly after receiving several calls and found the driver of the pickup truck, who admitted to pulling the trigger. Authorities detained the driver at the scene but later released him, believing he acted in self-defense.

The victim, identified as 29-year-old Gavin Dasaur, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

His wife, Cynthia, shared a video with 13 News from their wedding last month, expressing her grief and heartbreak.

“It’s such a tragedy that my husband was murdered in cold blood. As a grieving widow, my heart is shattered and my world will never be the same,” she said.

IMPD emphasized that road rage shootings like this one are preventable and urged drivers to avoid engaging with aggressive drivers.

“If someone upsets you out here on the roads, it’s not worth it. Just let them go. Don’t honk at them, don’t engage, don’t confront them, just let them go,” advised an officer.

Police are speaking with several witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. They urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.

That said, based on the available evidence and the X video posted above, do you believe the use of lethal force was justified?

He is 100% justified to shoot an aggressor yelling at him and brandishing a weapon. However, I would like to be able to see in front of his truck to see if he could have driven off. I know the Honda is partially blocking him, but I can’t see if he could have turned away and left. It is always best to walk away if possible. An incident like this can change your life for sure. He may not have charges now, but a liberal prosecutor could charge him later. Even if he never gets criminally charged, the widow could get an attorney and civilly sue him. You win every fight you avoid.

I can’t believe the guy in the white truck waited until the aggressor raised his right arm. The aggressor could have fired multiple rounds through the truck door. The shooter was in the right. This was self defense.

If this happened to me, I wouldn’t have let the aggressor get to my driver’s side door with a weapon. This guy would have been shot multiple times trying to approach me with a gun drawn. If you pull a gun, you better have a good reason. The aggressor brandished his weapon and threatened the driver in the white Chevy truck, trying to intimidate the driver. The consequences of his actions was being gunned down, in self defense, by the driver of the pick up truck.

The person who gets shot and dies is not necessarily the victim but perhaps an unsuccessful perpetrator or aggressor. Words have meaning.

Looks like self defense to me.

Always weird to open a news story and see the streets and intersections I grew up hanging around. Thompson and Emerson is a busy, busy intersection and people drove like morons there before I moved out in 1999. Add in thousands of new, bad drivers and this is sadly one byproduct.

This video does not make me want to move home any time soon.

If you have not looked at the twitter source that is indicated, you need to. It looks like the man that was shot has a gun in his hand. Regardless, he was the threat that ended with him dead. it is never a good idea to leave your vehicle to settle an argument.

  • Dude July 19, 2024, 9:10 am

Yeah. 100% self defense. The dead dude is dead because he charged up to the man’s truck with his gun drawn, screaming, and pounding on the man’s vehicle. The dead dude’s hand come up (after having switched the gun to his other hand outside the view of the driver) and he got popped. Anyone here going to wait around to see whether he’s still got the gun? Police themselves wouldn’t have waited as long as the driver and they would’ve emptied the mag. FAFO.

Very tragic, but preventable. Yes, this young lady lost her husband but apparently he was the hotheaded aggressor and paid with his life, otherwise the shooter wouldn’t have been released. We’ve all experienced road rage from time to time, and if you live in a large metropolitan city like I do, you see it everyday.

If you carry a gun, you also carry a greater responsibility to try and de-escalate any potentially bad situations like this. THINK before pulling that trigger. Even though this guys wasn’t charged, it’s still going to cost him.

      “THINK before pulling that trigger…”

While I wholeheartedly believe we must strive to avoid situations that may place us or others in harms way, as an LEO with significant training and experience, I know we may not have time to “THINK” in a deadly force situation. That’s why it’s so important to train to the point that defensive reactions are muscle memory.

Agreed. I try to hit the range every week. I’ve been carrying for 47 years. I stick by what I said. Before your testosterone takes over and you jump out of your car during a fit of rage and bravado, understand the other person may be armed too. And just a good of shot as I am. I prefer to avoid that kind of lunacy.
