Sunday evening, two 16-year-olds attempted to rob a man in his home in Saginaw, Texas. GunsAmerica spoke with Saginaw’s Assistant Chief of Police, Russel Ragsdale, to learn more about the incident.
While an investigation is still ongoing, what we know now is that an 18-year-old man was in his garage with the door open when he was approached by the two teens.
“Two males approached and one pulled a firearm, then the homeowner pulled his own,” Chief Russel told GunsAmerica.
The resident fired twice. One round hit the armed robber while the second missed and lodged into a wall. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he died from the gunshot wound.
The second teen fled the scene but was later apprehended. He was questioned but has not been charged, yet, and was released to his parents.

At this time, it appears that the victim did not know the assailants.
The victim was questioned but not charged with any crimes. The story so far is that the boys were trying to rob him.
“I anticipate that there will be more to this story that we can release in the future,” explained Asst. Chief Ragsdale.
The victim shot the robber with a Glock 26, which he had on his person. The robber was holding a Taurus 9mm semiautomatic pistol.
Chief Russel says they’ll post updates to their Facebook page. Saginaw is a small town in North Texas, a suburb of Fort Worth, with approximately 22,000 people. Crime rates in Saginaw are declining and they have fewer than 10 robberies each year.
Cheif Russel had some good advice for gun owners.
“I encourage private homeowners to have firearm insurance to cover the costs of counseling, etc. I recommend that all gun owners carry some kind of liability insurance to make those benefits available to them,” he said.
“We are not pressing criminal charges at this time [on the 18-year-old-victim], but the civil aspects will probably tie him up for a while with big costs,” he added.
Firearms insurance isn’t just for those who carry. You might need coverage if an incident occurs at the range, in a competition, or even while hunting. The insurance can also cover damages incurred with airguns, archery or trapping equipment. It can cover the costs of physical damage as well as the costs of lawsuits related to an incident. It’s surprisingly affordable. You can learn more about firearms insurance at USCCA.
Chief Russel finished with these words of wisdom for homeowners, “Be diligent, pay attention to your situational awareness. If you’re in your home, know that bad things happen even in your home, so be prepared.”
This event is kinda strange and as the investigation continues there will be facts released of the relationship between the teens probably not strangers maybe a score to settle and he was ready for the attempt. Tom
I live in a safe neighborhood, but whenever I’m in the garage with the door open, better believe I have a pistol! Good thing the 18 year old did too.
To think that this young person died because he was never taught to respect life & property. How very sad.
I commend the parents of the 18 year old! They taught him well. I wish all parents were so astute.
