While the cumbersome SPAS 12 died a natural death around the turn of the millennium, its cousin the LAW 12 was a prescient piece of iron indeed. I traded out of my old LAW 12 a couple decades ago but recently found another one and righted that past wrong.

When my editor gave me the opportunity to try out the new A350 XTrema Max5 from Beretta, I was happy to oblige. The last Beretta shotgun I looked at here was a prima donna – the Beretta 692 Sporting B-Fast over and under. While that one was certainly made to shoot and admire, I might have a little heartburn tossing it into a John boat in the middle of January. This 3.5-inch, 12 gauge A350 Xtrema Max5 model is all about maintaining a working gun reputation, but that doesn’t mean it skimps on classic Beretta features.

The X Rail crew are some old friends, and I was happy to catch up with them at SHOT Show. The original X Rail changed the way people thought about shotguns for competitive ventures, and the became the go-to, must-have shotgun add-on for open class shooters. Essentially a rotating drum magazine that goes on the end of your shotgun, it upped capacity to 22+1 with 2¾-inch shells. Mark told me he also made a special run of 3½-inch shell models for the local goose hunting crowd.

Sometimes you just must stop and go, “Have I seen everything?” As I got a chance to look at Adler Arms at SHOT Show 2017, I realized that they were not another me-too company. They had shotguns for hunting, sporting and tactical purposes. This included various schemes of Cerakote, wood and all manner of bolt-on products and accessories. You could pick any length barrel you wanted from 10 to to 28 inches., Oh, and they are all lever actions.

Standard Manufacturing Company never fails to impress.  This past year at SHOT Show, they released the Volleyfire, a six barrel, twin-shot carry gun.  Something to check out, if you haven’t already.
